Simmons Law School ribbon cutting is Friday

SIU Carbondale and its Simmons Law School will host two major events at the Lesar Law Building on Friday, Aug. 16 – an induction ceremony for the Class of 2027 and a ribbon-cutting for the law school. The latter ceremony will recognize the $10 million gift made by John and Jayne Simmons to the law school.


SIU’s stair climb to commemorate 9/11, War on Terror

The university will pay tribute to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, with a workout session at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept.11.  The 9/11 Saluki Stair Climb at Banterra Center involves a simulated 110-floor stair climb, representing the 110 floors of the World Trade Center twin towers that were destroyed that day.


Lot 11, near Student Center, closed for Tedrick Center construction 

Today (Aug. 15), SIU Carbondale and the SIU Foundation will prepare to build the Tedrick Welcome Center, a state-of-the-art facility serving as a hub for incoming and prospective students, campus visitors, community members and alumni. However, as with most construction projects, some people will be inconvenienced. Parking Lot 11, the red decal student commuter lot east of the Student Center, will be closed until construction is completed in May 2026. 


Fall 2024-spring 2025 information guide for faculty, staff and students 

A guide to important, student-related policies, information and resources is available online as a reference for all faculty, staff and students. You can access the “Fall 2024 – Spring 2025 Guide to Important Information for SIU Carbondale Students, Faculty, and Staff” on the Office of the Dean of Students website. In accordance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, the university’s 2024 Drug Free Schools and Campuses Annual Notification is also available online. 


Deadline to order discount season football tickets is Aug. 23 

The deadline for all SIU employees to order Saluki football season tickets at a 50% discount is Friday, Aug. 23. With an added scholarship fund donation, employees can also receive premium parking and club access. This includes all areas minus the chairbacks.


Friends of Morris Library fundraiser is Sept. 7 

An annual event that helps provide faculty, staff and students with essential extras in support of Morris Library’s educational and scholarly mission is set for Sept. 7 in the Student Center Ballrooms. Ticket sales end Aug. 31.


Reminder: Job analysis questionnaire deadline is Friday 

The deadline for SIU Carbondale civil service and administrative/professional employees to complete the job analysis questionnaire (JAQ) is Friday, Aug. 16. The JAQ is a key component of Compensation 2030, a project to create an updated, more equitable and more competitive compensation system at the university.


Dates open for Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main 

The SIU Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main has openings available for fall 2024 semester. Anyone interested in reserving the faculty-staff lounge for an event, or who would like to serve as a host, can email Events and Outreach at events@siu.edu.


Saluki Express bus service has new provider, routes 

Saluki Express, SIU Carbondale’s mass transit system, used by students, faculty, staff and community members, has changed its provider and routes due to a revised federal transportation classification and restructured funding as a result of the 2020 census.


SIU’s Gateway Journalism Review finds ‘minimal reforms’ 10 years after Michael Brown’s death 

Ten years after the August 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, a series by SIU Carbondale’s Gateway Journalism Review (GJR) looking at the state of racial justice — particularly in Missouri and Illinois — concludes that reforms sought after Brown’s death and those in other officer-involved shootings in the nation have been limited.


SIU logistics expert: Potential Canadian rail, dock strikes could have broad impact in U.S. 

If workers strike at both of Canada’s rail systems and the Port of Vancouver, the ramifications on the supply chain would extend throughout North America, says Gregory D. DeYong, associate professor of operations management.


Paul Simon Institute to host discussion on Illinois’ political landscape on Monday 

SIU Carbondale's Paul Simon Public Policy Institute will host a roundtable discussion in Chicago on Monday, Aug. 19 — the first day of the Democratic National Convention — that will consider the dramatically altered landscape of Illinois politics.


Community, vendors invited to SIU’s Foodie Fridays 

Foodie Fridays are coming to the Office of Innovation and Economic Development starting Friday, Aug. 16, and everyone is invited. The event at the SIU Research Park is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first and third Fridays of each month.


Reminder: Showcase SIU at the Du Quoin State Fair on Aug. 31 

Academic units, departments, student organizations and individuals will have an opportunity to showcase the great programs and services that SIU Carbondale provides to our region and beyond as a part of SIU Day at the Du Quoin State Fair on Saturday, Aug. 31.  The registration deadline to participate is Thursday, Aug. 22.


SIU Today to resume twice-a-week schedule Monday 

As the fall 2024 semester begins, starting Monday, Aug. 19, SIU Today will resume its usual twice-a-week schedule of Mondays and Thursdays, except for holidays, closures and breaks. Please remember the submission deadline is two business days before desired publication, if all the necessary information is provided. That means a noon Thursday deadline for Monday publication and a noon Tuesday deadline for Thursday publication.

The Department of Public Safety’s August 2024 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. This month’s edition includes details on a painted rock scavenger hunt for students; information on campus parking and bicycle registration; the fall semester move-in schedule; a recent DPS community outreach effort, and Saluki Patrol info.
