Media Advisory: SIU Simmons Law School ribbon cutting, induction on Aug. 16

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale and its Simmons Law School will host two major events at the Lesar Law Building on Friday, Aug. 16 – an induction ceremony for the Class of 2027 and a ribbon-cutting for the SIU Simmons Law School.

From 10:30 a.m. to noon, there will be an induction ceremony for 112 students, including remarks from Acting Dean Angela Upchurch, Chancellor Austin A. Lane, Board of Trustees member John Simmons, Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism Chief Counsel Mark Palmer and Illinois Supreme Court Justice David Overstreet.

At noon, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the front entrance of the Lesar Law Building. The ceremony will recognize the $10 million gift made by John and Jayne Simmons to the law school and showcase new signage with the new name of the school.

John Simmons will be joined by Upchurch, Lane, SIU System President Dan Mahony and Board of Trustees Chair Phil Gilbert. Refreshments and appetizers will follow inside the law school.
