Number of federal research grants at SIU rises
The number of SIU Carbondale researchers earning federal research grants as principal investigators rose again during fiscal year 2024, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research reports.
Another day added to winter break
Chancellor Austin Lane has approved an administrative closure on Monday, Dec. 23, as the start of the university’s winter break, which will continue through Jan. 1. Here is the revised fiscal year 2025 schedule.
Work on crosswalk near Neckers, Engineering
Weather permitting, workers will repave a crosswalk on Lincoln Drive near Neckers and the Engineering Building on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The work is expected to last one day, and traffic will be diverted from the area. Lot 47, near Neckers, will be accessible from the west.
SIU Alumni Association awards more than $59K in student scholarships
The SIU Alumni Association has awarded $59,288 to 46 new and returning SIU Carbondale students for the fall 2024 semester.

Eric Mandat is a world-renowned clarinetist and composer who has helped SIU Carbondale students unlock their potential for more than four decades.
Reminder: Complete job analysis questionnaire
Civil service and administrative/professional employees should have received an email on July 29 from noreply@qemailserver.com with a request to complete the job analysis questionnaire (JAQ) that is part of Compensation 2030, a project to create an updated, more equitable and more competitive compensation system at SIU Carbondale. The deadline to complete the JAQ is Aug. 9.
OIT earns international award
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) was recently honored with Tikit’s ITSM Award for Best Power Automate Flow. This international award celebrates the ingenuity and hard work that went into developing an automated process to provide swift and effective technology solutions.
Reminder: Showcase SIU at the Du Quoin State Fair on Aug. 31
Academic units, departments, student organizations and individuals will have an opportunity to showcase the great programs and services that SIU Carbondale provides to our region and beyond as a part of SIU Day at the Du Quoin State Fair on Saturday, Aug. 31.

Volunteers from the campus and community can help roll out the welcome mat for new and returning Salukis by helping them move in to their new homes before the fall 2024 semester begins. Signup to help is encouraged by Thursday, Aug. 8.
Becker honored posthumously at international conference
Jerry Becker, former SIU professor of mathematics education, was honored posthumously during the opening ceremony of the 15th International Congress on Mathematical Education on July 7 in Sydney, Australia. About 2,500 professors from 100 countries attended.
