Number of federal research grants at SIU rises

The number of SIU Carbondale researchers earning federal research grants as principal investigators rose again during fiscal year 2024, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research reports.

During FY 2024, 34 individual researchers were named PIs on federal research grants exceeding $50,000. The grants for this cohort total $10.3 million.

“Our federal research awards show continuous increase, with more PIs receiving them,” said Costas Tsatsoulis, vice chancellor for research. “These are fantastic numbers.”

The number of SIU researchers being named as principal investigators in significant federal research grants has risen steadily since fiscal year 2021 when 18 received that status. In FY 2022, that number grew to 19 before jumping to 29 last fiscal year.
