Becker honored posthumously at international conference
Jerry Becker, former SIU professor of mathematics education, was honored posthumously during the opening ceremony of the 15th International Congress on Mathematical Education on July 7 in Sydney, Australia. About 2,500 professors from 100 countries attended.
Becker, who served on the SIU faculty more than 40 years, from 1979 until his death in 2022, was a name synonymous with math education, colleagues said. In addition to his teaching and research at SIU, Becker also taught math courses at the University of Chicago for 100 Chicago public school teachers during the summer.
Becker also previously received the Distinguished Life Achievement in Mathematics Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota.
