Business students win national competition
National champions. That’s the title a Southern Illinois University Carbondale business student team claimed when competing for the first time ever in the Deloitte FanTAXtic Case Competition, which asks students to present solutions to a realistic business challenge and address business and tax implications.
Slots available for February for Chancellor’s Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main
The Chancellor’s Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main has several openings available for February and throughout the spring semester. A “Let's Talk Tech” session hosted by the Office of Information Technology is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 8, and it is an opportunity for faculty and staff to bring their ideas, ask questions and voice any concerns to OIT staff. A Feb. 15 event hosted by the Student Multicultural Resource Center is also planned. Anyone interested in reserving the faculty-staff lounge for an event, or who would like to serve as a host, can email events@siu.edu.
Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards nomination deadline is Friday
Each day, our colleagues across campus inspire us with their incredible talent, passion and commitment. The universitywide Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to let the SIU community know of that person’s many achievements.
Professor who specializes in energy to speak on Friday
A Canadian speaker will separately address young scientists and the energy-conscious during two sponsored lectures on Friday, Feb. 3, on campus.
SIU’s Tenney lecture to focus on interdisciplinary teaching of math, art and science
Sujan Shrestha, an associate professor at the University of Baltimore who is known for his research on teaching through games and interactive digital technology, will deliver the University Honors Program Charles D. Tenney Distinguished Lecture on Feb. 6.
SIU community invited to ‘Lessons You Don’t Learn in School’ that lead to career success
Faculty, staff and students are invited to “Lessons You Don’t Learn in School: How Failure, Authenticity and Confidence Lead to Career Success” from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 via Zoom.
Town hall on campus climate survey findings is Tuesday
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend a virtual town hall from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, where university leaders and representatives of constituency groups will discuss the findings of the SIU Campus Climate Survey.
L.E.A.D. nominations deadline is Wednesday
The deadline for nominations for the university’s second cohort of the L.E.A.D. SIU Carbondale initiative is Wednesday, Feb. 1. L.E.A.D. stands for Leading, Empowering, Advocating and Developing talent for the university. The initiative identifies, engages and mentors a select group of faculty and staff interested in learning more about higher education leadership and the complexities of operating a public university in today’s world.
Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available
The monthly Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for January 2023 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
