Opportunity zone to support local economic development

SIU remains attuned to ways we can support our regional and local economies. Being part of a newly designated “opportunity zone” will give us one more avenue to have a positive impact. 

 

SIU gets $2.2 million to continue STEM teacher development program

Building on its past success, Southern Illinois University Carbondale will receive another round of funding for a program that helps highly qualified teachers teach STEM subjects to junior high and high school students throughout the region.


‘9 to 5: The Musical’ kicks off McLeod Summer Playhouse’s mainstage season

Tumble outta bed and stumble to “9 to 5: The Musical” at McLeod Theater. Based on the seminal 1980-hit movie, the musical features performances starting Friday through June 24.


Lot 52 closed for two weeks for repaving 

Beginning Tuesday through June 30, Lot 52, the red commuter lot southeast of the College of Engineering, will close for repaving. Lot 37, the parking lot across the street from Lot 52, will be open for those who usually park in Lot 52. Temporary signage will be on display to assist motorists.


Computer science student wins international award for ‘DecisionDroid’ anti-pirate app

You might say Ayush Kohli hunts modern day pirates, and his field of battle is cyberspace.


Student wins award for invention of first portable prosthetic device for musicians 

When Tessa Barnes, a junior in industrial design, saw two of her fellow band members fight through their disabilities to play in the trumpet section of the SIUC Marching Band, she found motivation to create a prosthetic device that gave more mobility and freedom to brass musicians who are missing a portion of their arm.


Children’s summer camps filling up fast, sign up now 

While several of the 2018 children’s summer camps on campus are booked to capacity, there’s still time to register for numerous other academic, outdoor, artistic, music and athletic camps.


Students hit the road at this weekend’s Street Machine Nationals 

High performance street machines, hot rods and trucks will be on display at the General Tire Street Machine Nationals, and students with Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s nationally recognized automotive technology program will be there to get a hands-on experience and immerse themselves in the atmosphere.
