Helping rural veterans transition to civilian life through training, research

As the country prepares to commemorate Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11, Justin McDaniel, associate professor of public health at SIU Carbondale, is working on a two-year study on rural veterans adjusting to civilian life in a project funded by a National Science Foundation grant.


Book about forgotten Black leader in Illinois wins Friends of Morris Library Delta Award

Wayne T. Pitard and his book about John J. Bird, a well-known and highly respected leader in civil rights, politics and education more than 150 years ago in Illinois, will be honored Tuesday, Nov. 12, with the 2024 Friends of Morris Library Delta Award at 5 p.m. in the library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.


School of Art and Design 2024 Iron Pour is Saturday

The work and precision that go into making sculptures from cast iron molds will be highlighted when students in the School of Art and Design’s sculpture program host their free, annual fall cast iron pour, beginning at noon Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Foundry Complex, 1520-1560 W. Pleasant Hill Road, Carbondale.


SIU Brass Day features visits by middle, high school students, lecture and recital 

More than 100 middle school and high school students from throughout the region are expected to learn the intricacies of playing brass instruments and hear from accomplished tubist and composer Joanna Ross Hersey at the second Brass Day on Wednesday, Nov. 13. Hersey will also perform a free, public recital at 5 p.m. in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall


Student Speakers Forum on Nov. 14 to focus on time management

Five SIU Carbondale undergraduate students will share their thoughts on managing time in today’s fast-paced society on Thursday, Nov. 14, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. The free, public forum is from 7 to 8 p.m.


ITHelp virtual assistant to assist campus community 

The Office of Information Technology will release the ITHelp virtual assistant — an intuitive and continuously evolving tool designed for technology support — on Nov. 19. 


Register now for Technology and Innovation Expo 

Faculty and staff can register now for the SIU System’s Technology and Innovation Expo (TIE) on Dec. 5 from noon to 4:30 p.m. at SIU Carbondale’s Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center, with a reception following. It’s free to attend; lunch is included.  


Reminder: SIU to hold annual Veterans Day vigil

SIU Carbondale will publicly commemorate Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11, with the annual vigil at the flagpole on the corner of South Normal Avenue and West Grand Avenue, near the center of the SIU campus.


Sculptor to present visiting artist talk today

Sculptor and former SIU Carbondale faculty member Kristy Summers will give an artist talk in Wham Education Building, Room 105 at 7 p.m. today, Nov. 7. 


After Halloween, keep jack-o-lanterns out of landfills at SIU’s pumpkin smash

The Great Southern Illinois Pumpkin Smash is at the SIU Farms Service Center, 2740 Union Hill Road, between noon and 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.


Mandatory cybersecurity training extended to Nov. 29 

The deadline to complete the university’s mandatory cybersecurity training for faculty and staff has been extended to Nov. 29. Anyone with questions or technical concerns regarding the training is encouraged to contact SalukiTech for assistance. 


Reminder: Title IX training offered in person on Nov. 13 

SIU Carbondale employees have an additional option to complete mandatory Title IX training. The Office of Equity and Compliance will conduct in-person training from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. 


Saluki men’s, women’s basketball team host home openers 

The men’s basketball Salukis have their home opener on Friday, Nov. 8, when they host Missouri S&T at 7 p.m. with a special “Banterra Center 60th Birthday Bash,” while the women’s basketball Salukis open their home schedule with games against Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, and Louisiana Monroe at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13. The Saluki football team hosts Youngstown State at noon, Saturday, Nov. 9, in Saluki Stadium. The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host the A3 Performance Invitational, Nov. 14-16, at Shea Natatorium in the Student Recreation Center. Check team schedules at siusalukis.com.  


Reminder: Red Cross blood drive is Friday in Student Health Center 

Due to natural disasters, such as Hurricane Helene, that prompted blood drive cancellations in the affected areas, the American Red Cross is working to restock a critical need for blood. The Red Cross and Student Health Services  are hosting a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in the Student Health Center. Through Nov. 17, donors will receive a $10 e-gift card and be automatically entered for a chance to win a $7,000 prize. More information, including how to schedule an appointment, is available by visiting RedCrossBlood.org and entering SIUCStudentHealthCtr, or by downloading the Red Cross blood donor app.


Reminder: SIU Today Veterans Day observance 

There will be no SIU Today on Monday, Nov. 11, as the university is closed in honor and observance of Veterans Day. The submission deadline for the Nov. 14 edition is Tuesday, Nov. 12.  


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday       

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will celebrate the music of American jazz pianist and composer Mulgrew Miller. The service will also be livestreamed on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.
