Sculptor to present visiting artist talk Thursday
Sculptor and former SIU Carbondale faculty member Kristy Summers will give an artist talk in Wham Room 105 at 7 p.m. today, Nov. 7.
Summers is a working sculptor living between Bernard, Maine, and King Salmon, Alaska. After earning her M.F.A. from Alfred University in New York in 2006, she was awarded a fine arts fellowship at SIU, where she continued to work as a visiting assistant professor of sculpture and 3D foundations until 2014. She found her way to Alaska in 2014 and worked as an assistant professor of art (sculpture) at the University of Alaska Anchorage until fall 2021.
Summers has exhibited her work across the country including a number of sculpture parks, city outdoor sculpture programs, universities and gallery settings, and she had completed commission-based work.
“Though my work I create tools for understanding, representations of my perspectives and thoughts, as well as simple poetic narratives,” she said in an artist statement. “My work oftentimes is not grounded in the idea of absolutes but is made from intersecting inspirations pulled from today’s world and experiences.”
