SIU’s state-of-the-art, $7.2M BioLaunch boosts opportunities in science, the economy 

Officials on Oct. 4 cut the ribbon on SIU Carbondale’s $7.2 million BioLaunch lab, a new, 10,000-square-foot space dedicated to cutting-edge life sciences research and more.  


Ceremonies for Tedrick Welcome Center and Mike Hanes Marching Salukis Band Tower 

The SIU Foundation and SIU Carbondale will host two special events on Friday, Oct. 11. The first will break ground on a new building that will enrich the university, and the second will name a tower in honor of a beloved bandleader.


SIU Carbondale and SIU Edwardsville receive 2024 HEED Award

The SIU System announces that both SIU Carbondale and SIU Edwardsville are the recipients of the 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine.


Reminder: Flu immunizations available on campus Thursday 

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services will provide free flu immunizations for all active and retired SIU Carbondale employees, their dependents and surviving spouses enrolled in a state-sponsored health plan. The Jackson County Health Department will administer the immunizations at two walk-up flu shot clinics, set for 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, and Oct. 23 in the Student Center’s Renaissance Room.


Immigration/employment seminar is Tuesday 

Immigration attorney Thomas J. Arkell will present essential immigration information and employment options for faculty and staff, along with graduate and postdoctoral students, during a seminar at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Student Services Building, Room 170.


SIU units can win prizes in Green Office Challenge launching this month 

The SIU Sustainability Office is launching the Green Office Challenge, an initiative to inspire faculty and staff to follow more sustainable practices in their workplaces, and all departments across campus are invited to participate in the event being held with conjunction with the university’s celebration of October as Sustainability Month.


Paul Simon Institute will host leading U.S. budget expert Thursday 

William Hoagland, senior vice president of the Bipartisan Policy Center, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute on Thursday, Oct. 10, for a virtual discussion about the fiscal predicament facing the United States.


SIU researchers: Expect solar flares to cause celestial light show, disruptions 

Solar observers at SIU Carbondale said the highest energy solar flare of this solar cycle erupted Oct. 3, and scientists are expecting impacts on Earth in the next few days, ranging from the Northern Lights occurring much further south than usual to disruptions in telecommunications.


Reading treasures available at SIU Press Homecoming Book Sale Oct. 10-12

Southern Illinois University Press will host a Homecoming Book Sale, Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 10-12, in the Sharp Museum on the north end of Faner Hall. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.


SIU ceramics students to help fill community needs with Empty Bowls 

The talents of SIU Carbondale ceramics students will be on display on Saturday, Oct. 12, while helping the community. Empty Bowls returns to the Neighborhood Co-op Grocery in the Murdale Shopping Center, 1815 W. Main St. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or as long as the bowls last. Proceeds will go to The Survivor Empowerment Center (formerly The Women’s Center).


Reminder: ‘Before the West Coast’ sports civil rights film screening is Tuesday

A free screening of the documentary “Before the West Coast: A Sports Civil Rights Story,” by SIU Carbondale alumnus Oyd Craddock, is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.
