SIU Carbondale is welcoming new and returning students to campus during Saluki Startup and Weeks of Welcome with a wide variety of special activities designed to help them get acquainted with campus, the community and one another.
Higher ed veteran named SIU Carbondale associate provost for student success
Shelly Gehrke, who has more than 20 years in higher education experience in academic success and enrollment management initiatives, will become SIU Carbondale’s associate provost for student success, effective Sept. 9.
SIU IEA/NEA Faculty Association and SIU Carbondale partner to create key investments with new agreement
SIU Carbondale and the SIU Faculty Association have reached a collective bargaining agreement that has been ratified by the SIUFA membership, the university and the association announced on Aug. 5. The four-year agreement is effective July 1, 2024.
Job analysis questionnaire deadline extended to Aug. 16
The deadline for SIU Carbondale civil service and administrative/professional employees to complete the job analysis questionnaire (JAQ) has been extended to Aug. 16. The JAQ is a key component of Compensation 2030, a project to create an updated, more equitable and more competitive compensation system at the university.
Faculty, staff volunteers needed for info stations Aug. 19, 20
New Student Programs is hosting information stations at four strategic locations around campus on Aug. 19 and 20, the first two days of classes, and faculty/staff volunteers are needed to help.
Saluki Special offers chance to dine for reduced price at Trueblood, Lenz on Aug. 14
SIU’s Culinary and Nutrition Area, commonly known as “Dining,” is offering a Saluki Special during move-in this year. On Wednesday, Aug. 14, meals in Trueblood and Lentz Dining are available to anyone for the reduced price of $7 plus tax.
SIU plans astronomical viewing events this fall, including Star Party
SIU Carbondale will host a series of public astronomical viewings starting Aug. 18 and continuing through December.
SIU Carbondale is part of McHenry County College’s University Center
Chancellor Austin Lane, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Sheryl Tucker and Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management Wendell Williams joined MCC President Clint Gabbard and others to help welcome the University Center at McHenry County College (MCC) in Woodstock at a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug. 1.
Former Ottawa mayor receives 2024 Simon-Edgar Statesmanship Award
Former Ottawa Mayor Robert Eschbach has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the Paul Simon-Jim Edgar Statesmanship Award. Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar and John Shaw, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, announced Eschbach’s selection on Aug. 6.
SIU Today to resume twice-a-week schedule Aug. 19
As the fall 2024 semester begins, starting Monday, Aug. 19, SIU Today will resume its usual twice-a-week schedule of Mondays and Thursdays, except for holidays, closures and breaks. Please remember the submission deadline is two business days before desired publication, if all the necessary information is provided. That means a noon Thursday deadline for Monday publication and a noon Tuesday deadline for Thursday publication.
New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday
Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will feature works by Chet Baker, Roger Davidson, Hank Jones, Harold Ousley, Charlie Parker and Joshua Redman. The service will also be livestreamed on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.
