SIU Carbondale’s spring 2024 enrollment rises
Southern Illinois University Carbondale spring 2024 enrollment is up almost 4% – 401 students – compared to last year. This follows a fall that saw the first enrollment growth since 2014.
Student team led by SIU prof seeks to use algae to grow out-of-this-world crops
A team of students led by Scott D. Hamilton-Brehm, associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences, is one of just 15 nationwide finalists for the U.S. Department of Energy AlgaePrize 2023-2025 Competition. And if the Carbondale team succeeds, its project could be used to grow crops in off-Earth environments such as its moon and Mars.
Provost Faculty Fellow program applications open
Applications will be accepted for tenured SIU Carbondale faculty to participate in the Provost Faculty Fellow program for the fall 2024 semester with possible renewal in spring 2025. The deadline to apply is April 1.
2023 W-2’s available through HRSS
Faculty and staff are reminded that their W-2 forms for 2023 are available through the Human Resources Self Service portal for employees who agreed to receive electronic W-2’s. For those who did not provide electronic consent, your 2023 W-2 form was scheduled to be mailed by Jan. 31.
Paul Simon Institute to host Chicago political expert, author Dick Simpson
Dick Simpson, a former Chicago alderman, campaign strategist and author, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute on Tuesday, Feb. 6, for a virtual conversation on his two latest books that look at Chicago politics.
Property Control to use mobile app for equipment inventory
Property Control will employ an innovative solution designed to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the annual fixed asset equipment inventory this year with a mobile app. Training sessions for the newly developed program will be Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 14-15. Attendance is required for all employees responsible for their unit’s equipment inventory.

Hundreds of students to compete in Accounting Challenge Feb. 2
Hundreds of high school and community college students from throughout the region will be on campus on Friday, Feb. 2, to compete for scholarships, trophies and bragging rights during the 26th annual Accounting Challenge.
Sign up now for Give Kids a Smile Day
SIU Carbondale's Dental Hygiene Program is again hosting its popular annual “Give Kids a Smile Day” on March 1 to provide free, vital dental services to children. The event is set for 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the SIU Carbondale Dental Hygiene Clinic, west of Banterra Center.
Reminder: Sturgis Public Service Award nominations due Feb. 21
Nominations for the Lindell W. Sturgis Memorial Public Service Award, which honors an SIU Carbondale employee for their community work away from campus, are being accepted. Nominations must be received by Feb. 21.
