Holiday event to recognize service, retiring employees is Dec. 4

The university will recognize current employees for their service and commitment and honor retiring employees during a ceremony and reception Dec. 4 in the Student Center Ballrooms. The ceremony starts at 10 a.m. A holiday reception hosted by Chancellor Austin Lane is from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the International Lounge and precedes the recognition ceremony.


Chicago radiologic sciences student wins free tuition for a semester

It’s not often that a fun evening at a basketball game with friends turns into a free semester of college, but that’s exactly what happened to Miriamm Martinez, a sophomore radiologic sciences major. She was chosen at random Nov. 17 as the winner of free tuition for the spring semester when more than 2,000 SIU students attended the men’s basketball game.


Football Salukis to compete against Idaho in playoffs

After its 35-0 victory over Nicholls State this past weekend, the football Salukis are advancing in the playoffs to compete against No. 4-seed Idaho next Saturday at 9 p.m. central in Moscow, Idaho.


Volleyball Salukis earn program’s second ever postseason bid with trip to NIVC

The women's volleyball Salukis accepted a bid to the 2023 NIVC Tournament, with the first match in Des Moines against DePaul on Wednesday (Nov. 29) at 3 p.m. Central. The Salukis’ postseason berth marks the second in program history and first appearance in the National Invitational Volleyball Tournament.


Conversation on counteracting anti-ADEI policies is Tuesday

A Conversation of Understanding on Tuesday, Nov. 28, will look at confronting and counteracting policies and legislation that hinder anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion (ADEI) efforts. National ADEI experts will share their insights, experiences and ideas. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members are invited to join the live virtual discussion at noon.


Wind Ensemble closes fall semester with Nov. 30 performance

The School of Music’s Wind Ensemble will present its final concert of the semester at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, in Shryock Auditorium. The ensemble will present “Time and Place” in a free, public performance.

Faculty and staff should take two important steps to prepare for inclement weather: review the campus policy and ensure that the university has your current cellphone number if you want to receive emergency text alerts.


Talk to focus on link between eclipses and societal upheaval

Ken Anderson, Advanced Energy Institute director and professor of geology, will give the December “Journey to the Eclipse” talk, focusing on times when, according to the historic record, the sun did not behave as it should. The monthly discussion is at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. The event is free and open to the campus and public.

The 45th annual Holiday Craft Sale is just the place to find perfect gifts or treats for yourself this yuletide season. The event is Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in the Student Center's Art Gallery on the first floor.


Explore the region's innovation and entrepreneurship at Nov. 30 showcase 

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase hosted by the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center on Thursday, Nov. 30, will celebrate the region’s newest innovators, inventors and entrepreneurs.


Reminder: Thanks “Giving Back” Food Drive is Nov. 28

Faculty and staff can assist SIU Carbondale students who need a little help now and then through the Thanks “Giving Back” Campus Food Drive. The food drive is set for 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, and all donations will go to the Saluki Food Pantry.


Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available

The latest Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for November 2023 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
