SIU researcher’s team advocates for new assessment, treatment approach for juvenile sex offenders   

Tamara Kang, assistant professor in the School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences, and her colleagues have created a new research-based assessment for juvenile sex offenders, which they say is  more accurate, effective and beneficial for the young offenders and society as a whole than current systems. And since 95-97% of juveniles won’t reoffend, the team recommends treatment over incarceration.


Affirmative Action and Equity and Compliance offices move to HR 

The University Affirmative Action and Equity and Compliance offices have been realigned under the Human Resources umbrella, effective July 1.  


University phone service to transition to MS Teams Calling  

The campus recently experienced phone system failure, which has left much of the west side of campus without service. Because new parts are not available for the existing system, SIU Carbondale is moving forward with its plans to adopt a modern calling solution to support it into the future. Those areas without phone service will be transitioned first, with the rest of the campus to follow.    


Saluki Pride: Kelly Caringer receives SIU’s Civil Service Staff Excellence Award 

Kelly Caringer might wear many hats in his job as chief instructional media systems engineer in the Center for Teaching Excellence, but each plays an important part in helping faculty, staff and students succeed. He is the 2023 university-level Staff (Civil Service) Award winner, one of eight Excellence Awards to honor faculty and staff for superior scholarship and creative endeavors, teaching and service.


SIU hosts ‘Corduroy’ July 12-16 for children of all ages

The generational classic tale of unconditional love and a department store teddy bear who yearns to be taken home by a child comes to SIU’s Christian H. Moe Laboratory Theater next week. The stage adaptation of children’s author Don Freeman’s classic “Corduroy” is sure to delight young audiences 10 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday, July 12-15, and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 16.


SURS changes for new employees hired after July 1          

State University Retirement System-eligible SIU Carbondale employees who are hired on or after July 1, 2023, will be automatically enrolled in the SURS Deferred Compensation Plan with a 3% pre-tax deduction. There are no changes for current employees who are already certified in SURS. Employees who are already certified in SURS or who are previously certified in SURS and are re-employed are not automatically enrolled, but they may voluntarily enroll. Employees who are automatically enrolled in the SURS Deferred Compensation Plan will have 30 calendar days from their hire date to opt out of the plan. Reminder: SIU System Faculty Collaboration Award nominations open  

The Faculty Advisory Committee for the SIU System (FACSS) is accepting applications for its inaugural Faculty Collaboration Award. The annual award will recognize faculty for impactful collaborative endeavors across campuses in the areas of teaching, scholarship and creative activities, service and/or antiracism, diversity, equity and inclusion. The nomination deadline is Aug. 31.


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, along with guests will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 9. NAJ was formed in 1984 among several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. Learn more about NAJ.
