‘Phenomenal’ SIU zoology student wins Goldwater Scholarship

Aleida Iriarte, a member of the University Honors Program and a junior majoring in zoology and chemistry from Chicago, is one of just 413 winners chosen from nearly 1,300 nominations nationwide to be named a Goldwater Scholar.


More than 1,800 students will be honored at commencement exercises

The academic achievements of more than 1,800 SIU Carbondale students will be celebrated during spring 2023 commencement exercises May 12-13.


Incoming SIU students celebrate Decision Day in Southern Illinois

To mark Decision Day (May 1), SIU Carbondale officials visited Southern Illinois high schools and community colleges in the region this week to celebrate the students’ decision to attend SIU this fall. The officials congratulated about 90 students and provided special giveaways. SIU representatives visited Marion High School, Herrin High School, Elverado High School, Johnston City High School, Murphysboro High School, Carbondale Community High School, John A. Logan College and Rend Lake College. 


Benefits Choice open enrollment deadline is May 31

The deadline for the State Employees Group Insurance Program Benefit Choice open enrollment for all eligible employees is May 31. For the upcoming year, there are no premium increases. Employees are encouraged to review the Benefits Choice Booklet and select the best coverage for themselves and/or their families. An on-campus Benefits Choice Fair will be held May 16.


Prudential long term disability enrollment is this month

Prudential Long Term Disability is having an open enrollment period in May. No evidence of insurability form is needed to enroll during this period. The deadline to participate for all eligible employees is May 31.


Morris Library’s Special Collections to celebrate donation of 500 books addressing diversity

Morris Library’s Special Collections Research Center is hosting a celebration Friday, May 5, to recognize the donation of more than 500 books from the Student Multicultural Resource Center.


SIU’s new Asian Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Council selects officers

SIU’s Asian Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Council (APIFSC), a new constituency group, has begun meeting, and on April 27, the group gathered and elected officers and representatives.


SIU Student Distinguished Service Award winners recognized 

Four students from SIU Carbondale, the SIU School of Law and the SIU School of Medicine were among those honored by the SIU Board of Trustees and the Student Advisory Committee from the SIU System on April 28 with the 2023 SIU System Student Distinguished Service Awards. Recognized were undergraduate student Alexis Hamon, graduate student Natalie Hite, law student Alexandra Williams and medical student Kanicia Garcia. The award recognizes and honors the efforts and contributions of students in the SIU System “whose acts of service are demonstrative of excellence and exemplary commitment to the support, advancement and achievement of fellow students, their campus, and their community.” Additional information on all of the SIU System winners is available in this news release.


Saluki AdLab earns student advertising district title, advances to semifinals

For the second time in three years, Saluki AdLab captured the National Student Advertising District 6 competition this past weekend in South Bend, Indiana. The team is competing in virtual semifinals today and Friday, May 4-5, for a chance to advance to the finals at the American Advertising Federation National Conference in June in St. Louis.


SIU to offer coursework through University Center at McHenry County College

In a new partnership between SIU Carbondale and McHenry County College, MCC alumni and community members throughout McHenry County will be able to complete SIU Carbondale coursework in accounting, information technology, and industrial maintenance and applied engineering, all starting in fall 2024 at the new University Center at MCC in Woodstock.


SIU’s 2023 homecoming celebrates ‘Salukis in Paradise’

“Salukis in Paradise” is the theme for SIU Carbondale's 2023 homecoming festivities, set for Oct. 16-21.
