SIU Day of Giving: 3,700+ donors give over $4M

The 2023 SIU Day of Giving reached new heights, raising $4,037,918 in 24 hours. The funds will enhance scholarship opportunities, supporting faculty, purchasing equipment and much more. There were 3,702 individual donations made from donors in 45 states. The total raised and amount of donations are both new SIU Day of Giving records.


SIU robotics teams gear up for battle, moon mining

Two teams of up-and-coming engineers are getting ready to rumble – robot style – while a third team is building one that theoretically could remotely mine the moon for precious minerals. The SIU robo-battle teams – Demo Dawgs and Team Better Team – will compete at this year’s Robobrawl tournament at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, today through Saturday, March 30-April 1.

Just one year and one day from the highly anticipated total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to learn more about the university’s plans and how to become involved during a presentation on Friday, April 7.


SISO to perform spring family concert April 4

The Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra closes out its 2022-23 season, beginning next week with a family friendly performance on Tuesday, April 4, at SIU Carbondale’s Shryock Auditorium. In addition to the spring family concert — the second part of the symphony’s introduction to orchestral masterpieces — a pair of free ensemble performances at more intimate locations is planned during the month.


SIU honors students will participate in USDA-funded initiative on food and sustainability

Honors students will participate in a three-year nationwide program starting this fall aimed at developing innovative teaching and holistic approaches relating to food, climate justice and sustainable agriculture. SIU is one of 14 universities and colleges in The Justice Challenge: Engaging Students in the Future of Food, Climate, and Sustainable Agriculture, funded by a $749,977 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.


Lavender Graduation volunteers, sponsors sought 

SIU is hosting its annual Lavender Graduation on April 28 at 5 p.m. in the Old Main Room of the Student Center to recognize LGBTQ+ student who will graduate. Volunteers and sponsors are needed to assist with the ceremony.


Conversation on elevating employee appreciation at SIU is available

The March 28 Conversation of Understanding virtual discussion on elevating employee appreciation at SIU is available for viewing. This academic year, six Conversations of Understanding will focus on findings from the 2022 Viewfinder Campus Climate Survey. Previous conversations are also available for viewing.


SIU Geologists Day celebration set for Sunday 

Find an interesting rock and wonder about its history and pedigree? SIU will celebrate Geologists Day on Sunday, April 2, with an informational clinic at the home of the university’s geology program.


Remember to wear maroon on SpiritFriday

Friday is always a great time to show off your maroon when looking toward the weekend like H.D. Motyl, professor and interim director of the School of Theater and Dance. The SIU women’s softball team hosts Indiana State for three games, Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2, at Charlotte West Stadium. The Saluki baseball team hosts Lindenwood at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at Itchy Jones Stadium. Be sure and tag your favorite photo in Saluki best with #SpiritFriday. 


Deadline to sign up for Imagine Your Genius is Friday

The everyday talent and creativity of the Saluki community will be on tap during the Imagine Your Genius Showcase, set for 5-8 p.m. April 6 at Shryock Auditorium. SIU students, faculty, and staff interested in participating should sign up by March 31. The article about the event now includes a video message from the chancellor.
