Maple Syrup Festival is March 25-26

Homemade maple syrup, one of nature’s original comfort foods, is the star of the show at the popular annual Maple Syrup Festival, set for March 25-26, at the Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center.


SIU researcher and blood clot survivor shares expertise for Blood Clot Awareness Month  

Julie Partridge, graduate program director and professor of sport and exercise psychology in the School of Human Sciences, knows full well how sudden and dangerous a blood clot can be, and shares her professional and personal expertise about clots, their sometimes deadly effects and their prevention. Partridge has become involved in advocacy work with the National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) and currently serves as the vice chair of the organization’s board of directors. She recently spoke at the 15th annual John Hopkins Medicine VTE Symposium and will be traveling to Washington, D.C. later this month to lobby for an increase in funding to the Centers for Disease Control for blood disorders, including clots.   


April active threat exercise: crisis planning and teamwork   

The Emergency Operations Center orchestrates the response to on-campus emergencies. Several key departments assemble to become the center point for coordinating resources. Since fall, the EOC has been planning the 2023 “active threat” exercises scheduled for April. More information is forthcoming. In the meantime, you can learn more about emergency preparedness and procedures in various situations at emergency.siu.edu. SURS general retirement counseling sessions still available 

Slots are still available for university employees eligible for retirement and who are interested in contacting the State Universities Retirement System (SURS) for an in-person retirement counseling appointment on campus. Counseling representatives from SURS will be on campus April 11 and 12 for 45-minute in-person counseling sessions to answer questions and assist in planning for retirement. SURS members who have met with a counselor or had retirement estimates within the last 12 months will not be eligible for appointments. 


Filmmaker Bryan Konefsky to present lecture tonight

Bryan Konefsky, a moving image artist, teacher, lecturer, and the founder and director of Experiments in Cinema, an annual international film festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will present a lecture at 6:30 p.m. today, March 9, in Browne Auditorium (Parkinson Hall, Room 124). The discussion is free and open to SIU students, faculty and staff, and the general public.


SIU Student Distinguished Service Award deadline is March 24  

The application deadline for faculty and staff to nominate a deserving student for an SIU Student Distinguished Service Award by the SIU Board of Trustees is March 24. The award recognizes and honors the efforts and contributions of students in the SIU System “whose acts of service are demonstrative of excellence and exemplary commitment to the support, advancement and achievement of fellow students, their campus, and their community.”  


Fridays are for maroon 

Don’t forget to wear maroon on campus each Friday. With upcoming concerts, plays and lectures on campus, there is always a good time to show off your fashion style, particularly with Spirit Fridays. Elizabeth Bland, coordinator of student transition and success in the College of Agricultural, Life and Physical Sciences, shows her Saluki spirit. Remember the deadline to enter the door decorating contest is 11:59 p.m. Friday, March 10; more information and the form to enter are available here. The women’s basketball team opens the Missouri Valley Conference Hoops in the Heartland tournament against Indiana State at 6 p.m. today, March 9, in Moline. The Saluki baseball team hosts Kentucky in a three-game set at Itchy Jones Stadium Friday through Sunday, March 10-12, while the softball team faces Missouri State at Charlotte West Stadium Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14-15. Encourage grads to attend Grad Bash on March 21 

Faculty and staff are encouraged to remind graduating seniors of Grad Bash on March 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Guida-Moller Family Alumni Center courtyard tent near Woody Hall. 


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, along with guests will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 12. NAJ was formed in 1984 among several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. Learn more about NAJ.
