SIU students work on $2M advertising campaigns for state agencies

Students in the School of Journalism and Advertising, under the direction of Bridget Lescelius, associate lecturer and director of Saluki AdLab, and Jan Thompson, professor and school director, are gaining invaluable experience by working on advertising campaigns for the Illinois Department of Public Health and Illinois State Police.


University marks Women’s History Month in March with speakers, special events

SIU will mark Women's History Month in March through “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.” The festivities begin Wednesday, March 1, with Sheila Simon, assistant professor of law at the SIU School of Law, presenting “Finding and Sharing Women’s History” at 1 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom B.


Epplin is the new Student Center director 

Kent Epplin, the longtime Student Center associate director of facilities and operations, was recently chosen as its new director. 


SURS general retirement counseling 

University employees eligible for retirement may contact the State Universities Retirement System (SURS) for an in-person retirement counseling appointment on campus. Counseling representatives from SURS will be on campus April 11 and 12 for 45-minute in-person counseling sessions to answer questions and assist in planning for retirement. SURS members who have met with a counselor or had retirement estimates within the last 12 months will not be eligible for appointments.


SIU Student Distinguished Service Award  

Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate a deserving student for an SIU Student Distinguished Service Award by the SIU Board of Trustees. The award recognizes and honors the efforts and contributions of students in the SIU System “whose acts of service are demonstrative of excellence and exemplary commitment to the support, advancement and achievement of fellow students, their campus, and their community.” The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. March 24. 


Tenney lecture to focus on interdisciplinary teaching of math and textiles 

Elisabetta Matsumoto, an associate professor of physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology whose research centers on the relationship between geometry and material properties of soft systems including textiles, 3D printing and liquid crystals, will deliver the University Honors Program Charles D. Tenney Distinguished Lecture at 3 p.m. Friday, March 3, in Morris Library's John C. Guyon Auditorium.


Paul Simon Institute to host state Sen. Dale Fowler Thursday

Illinois State Sen. Dale Fowler will discuss this year’s legislative agenda for the state when he participates in a Pizza & Politics session on Thursday, March 2, at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.


SIU hosts annual high school press association event

More than 225 students from 15 local high schools gained greater insight into journalism, advertising, yearbook and graphic design at the 72nd annual Southern Illinois School Press Association Winter Conference hosted by the School of Journalism and Advertising on Feb. 22.
