Undergrad researchers to show off their projects
Undergraduate students participating in the McNair Scholars and SI Bridges to the Baccalaureate programs will present their work at the 19th annual McNair Summer Research Symposium on Friday.
SIU names Tim Leonard as its 16th director of intercollegiate athletics
Veteran athletic administrator Tim Leonard has been named the full-time director of intercollegiate athletics at SIU Carbondale. He begins his duties Aug. 1.
Renada Greer is new Student Multicultural Resource Center director
Renada Greer, a triple alumna and longtime student supporter and proponent of campus diversity and equity at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, has been chosen as the new executive director of the Student Multicultural Resource Center.
Tena Bennett is now assistant vice chancellor for auxiliary enterprise
Tena Bennett, the longtime director of the Student Center, has been named the new assistant vice chancellor for auxiliary enterprise. The SIU Board of Trustees approved the appointment July 21.

Ivanovich “Ivan” Vargas gives his all as an academic adviser for the College of Business and Analytics, colleagues say, uplifting and engaging them and empowering them to succeed. Cristina Castillo, coordinator of the Hispanic/Latino Resource Center, notes Vargas “is compassionate and truly cares about his students and their academic career and goals.” Nominating a colleague is easy; simply fill out this form.
SIU’s Hemp and Cannabis Symposium is moving to fall
Save the date: the next Southern Illinois Hemp and Cannabis Symposium is Sept. 17, as it transitions to the new annual fall schedule. The popular event at SIU Carbondale has traditionally been held in the spring.
Reminders on completed timesheets, secondary employment
The Department of Human Resources is reminding all university employees to properly complete the required time-keeping reports and to follow the conflict of interest/commitment policy.
Portions of Lincoln Drive to be shut down for two weeks
Some university employees will need to find alternate routes as a portion of Lincoln Drive between Chautauqua Road and Poplar Street will be closed for drainage and road repairs. Work began July 26. The road is expected to reopen the week of Aug. 8.

The tradition of Labor Day as the kickoff for the November general election is now “obsolete,” according to John Jackson, a visiting professor with the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.
‘Illinois Ethics Matters’ newsletter is available
The monthly Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for July 2022 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
