SIU to honor seven Excellence Award recipients
The university will recognize seven faculty and staff members for superior scholarship and creative endeavors, teaching and service with the 2022 Excellence Awards. The awards are bestowed annually for exceptional work both in and outside the classroom. The recipients will be recognized during a ceremony at 3 p.m. today, April 18, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.
SIU leads coalition for regional transition to renewable energy
A partnership led by SIU Carbondale is one of just 22 groups across the country chosen to receive technical assistance to plan and lead transitions to clean energy at the community level.
SIU Alumni Association investigates campus myths in new docuseries ‘Saluki Sleuths’
The university’s diverse campus history has sparked entertaining legends, stories and questions that are passed down from generation to generation. The SIU Alumni Association saw an opportunity to dig deep and get some real answers. “Saluki Sleuths” is a new mini documentary series uncovering the truth through interviews with campus experts and research from university archives.
SIU Carbondale inducts 38 students into Phi Kappa Phi honor society
Thirty-eight SIU Carbondale graduate and undergraduate students were inducted into the university’s chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society on April 11. NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson was presented with a lifetime membership. In addition, SIU System President Dan Mahony; Sheila Caldwell, chief diversity officer of the SIU System, and Randolph Burnside, director of the Medical Education Preparatory (MEDPREP) program with the SIU School of Medicine were inducted as members.
Illinois state senator to discuss spring legislative session, GOP priorities
Illinois State Sen. Jason Barickman will discuss his career in politics and the most recent spring legislative session in a virtual conversation Thursday, April 21, hosted by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.
SIU hosting Hope Walks Here suicide prevention walk
The university is sponsoring the fifth annual Hope Walks Here Out of the Darkness Campus/Community Walk. The event, set for 5 p.m. Saturday, April 23, will raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Registration and check-in is at 4:30 p.m., and the walk begins at the front entrance of the Student Center. Online registration is also available until noon April 22.
Virtual workshop will help faculty, staff and students cope with stress
Sky@SIUC, a registered student organization, is hosting its 15th SKY Happiness Retreat April 22-24, and the virtual retreat will focus on helping participants handle stress by promoting connectedness, self-care and the mental well-being of students, faculty and staff.

SIU’s Export Control’s April 2022 issue is available. The newsletter provides a resource for current export control issues and events that could affect SIU and its faculty. This edition includes articles on academic export controls enforcement. There is also information on foreign “talents” programs, equipment used in research and the SIU Clean Laptop Program.
