SIU math education professor receives Fulbright

Cheng-Yao Lin, mathematics education, recently received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award and next spring will travel to Taiwan to compare the mathematics education methods of Taiwan and the United States as well as teach.


SIU, Shawnee Community College sign agreement for students to earn two degrees

Chancellor Austin Lane and Shawnee Community College President Tim Taylor today, May 27, formalized a reverse transfer agreement that will allow eligible students to earn their associate degrees from Shawnee while they earn their bachelor’s degrees from SIU.


Taking charge: SIU automotive course incorporating electric vehicle advances

The automotive technology program isn’t taking a back seat as the country and automotive industry continue moving toward greater reliance on electric vehicles. A recently developed 10-week, six-credit-hour course on electric vehicle propulsion by Jessica Suda, an assistant professor, is the latest example, as the nationally recognized program’s curriculum has incorporated a focus on hybrid and electric vehicles for several years.


Benefit Choice open enrollment deadline is Monday

The deadline for the State Employees Group Insurance Program Benefit Choice open enrollment for all eligible employees is Monday, May 31. For the upcoming year, there are plan changes, and insurance premiums will increase. Employees are encouraged to review the booklet and select the best coverage for themselves and/or their families.


Illinois’ chief fiscal officer to speak in Paul Simon Institute virtual event

Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza will join Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual conversation at 10 a.m. June 4.


Nominate a student for SIU System Distinguished Student Service Award

The Southern Illinois University System, SIU Board of Trustees and the SIU System Student Advisory Board seek your nomination of a student who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to service benefiting their campus, their community and the SIU System for the inaugural 2021 SIU System Distinguished Student Service Award. ‘Decal-By-Mail’ program available through Monday  

Eligible faculty and staff are reminded that the Department of Public Safety Parking Division’s Decal-By-Mail program for the fiscal year 2022 beginning July 1 will be available through Monday, May 31. Applicants must use payroll deduction.

University Communications and Marketing earned several awards in the 36th Educational Advertising Awards competition. 


‘Illinois Ethics Matters’ newsletter is available

The monthly Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for May 2021 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is at siusystem.edu/ethics.
