State of the University address is Monday

Members of the university community are invited to attend Interim Chancellor Paul Sarvela’s State of the University address at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, in Ballroom D of the Student Center. A reception will follow. A transcript of the speech will be posted to the chancellor’s website within two days of the presentation. 


Freshman enrollment and total enrollment rise 

Freshman enrollment increased 2.4 percent in fall 2014, while total enrollment increased slightly to 17,989 from 17,964 in fall 2013.  More


New Information Security Plan in effect

All campus faculty, staff and students need to know of a new SIU System Information Security Plan now in effect.  The Board of Trustees on July 24 approved a new policy allowing each SIU campus to establish a formalized Information Security Program, or ISP. More 


SEALs to discuss leadership, honor friend

Two senior enlisted leaders of U.S. Navy SEAL Team 17 will talk about leadership at a forum on Sept. 13 in the Student Center Auditorium.  The event coincides with the university’s annual military appreciation game and the Traveling Vietnam Wall exhibit on display Sept. 11-14, on the practice football field south of Saluki Stadium.  More 


Fraternity earns national recognition

The Theta Zeta chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at SIU received the 2014 True Merit Award at the 81st Biennial Congress of Alpha Tau Omega Awards Banquet recently in Orlando, Fla.  The award, presented Aug. 2, recognizes the chapter for commitment to the ATO mission and for demonstrating positive community and campus involvement.  The award also denotes excellence in recruitment and communication. Day of the Dead exhibit, discussion set

Carbondale’s Morris Library will recognize a worldwide tradition with special “Day of the Dead” festivities and an art exhibit that runs Sept. 15 to Nov. 15 in the first-floor rotunda. More 


Free research workshops available

Faculty and staff should be aware of an opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing research projects.  Beginning Monday, Sept. 8, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities will host free research and creative activities workshops for all undergraduate students. More


State employee contribution drive starts Sept. 12

University employees will have the opportunity again this year to contribute to the State Employees Care A Lot (SECA) charity of your choice. More 


‘Tuesday Trek’ will tour campus

The first ‘Tuesday Trek’ of the fall semester is set for 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 9. The 1.5-mile walk will start at the Student Services Building Pavilion and proceed through campus. Participants are encouraged to bring their walking shoes.
