SIU plans insightful activities for 2026 Black History Month

“A Century of Black History Commemorations” is the theme as SIU Carbondale observes Black History Month in February with guest speakers and a host of special activities and events. Everything is open to the public, and virtually everything is free. Kickoff is Feb. 2.


Reminder: Prepare for inclement weather  

With the possibility of a winter storm in the forecast, the Emergency Operations Center is actively monitoring weather conditions. Faculty and staff should take two important steps to prepare for inclement weather: review the campus policy and ensure that the university has your current cellphone number if you want to receive emergency text alerts.  


Hundreds of visiting students to compete at SIU’s Accounting Challenge

Scores of high school and community college students from all over Southern Illinois will compete for scholarships and prestige at the 28th annual Accounting Challenge, set for Friday, Jan. 23.


Provost Faculty Fellow program applications open 

Applications are available for SIU Carbondale faculty to participate in the Provost Faculty Fellow program for the fall 2026 semester with possible renewal up to six total semesters. The deadline to apply is March 1.


SIU Alumni Association launches Saluki Market, a new hub for alumni entrepreneurs 

What began as an idea to help Salukis support one another has quickly become a success story. Since launching in late 2025, Saluki Market, the SIU Alumni Association’s newest venture, has generated more than $6,000 in first-month sales, connecting alumni, students and friends of SIU Carbondale with businesses owned by alumni and friends of the university. 


Conversation of Understanding will focus on nurturing minds, bodies

A Conversation of Understanding on Wednesday, Jan. 28, will focus on measures to nurture healthy minds, bodies and spirits across the SIU System that support long-term well-being.


SIU employee appreciation lunch special is Wednesday

SIU Carbondale’s Employee Appreciation group has worked with Carbondale Main Street to establish a designated employee lunch day for SIU faculty and staff on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The first lunch day will be Jan. 28.


Symposium on Education Abroad is Feb. 13

All SIU faculty, staff and administrators are invited to attend the inaugural SIU Faculty and Adviser Symposium on Education Abroad, set for 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 13 at the John C. Guyon Auditorium and surrounding area at Morris Library.


Indoor track, Saluki basketball highlight this weekend 

The Saluki women’s basketball team hosts Indiana State at 6 p.m. today, Jan. 22, at Banterra Center. Due to the possibility of a winter storm this weekend, the Saluki men’s and women’s track teams’ Don DeNoon Classic will be at 2 p.m. today and 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at the SIU Recreation Center. The Saluki men’s basketball team hosts Northern Iowa at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Banterra Center. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com.


Reminder: Budget management report training sessions 

The Office of Administration and Finance is offering in-person training sessions to help SIU Carbondale employees learn how to use the new Saluki Budget Management Report. Training sessions continue Jan. 23, 26-28 and Jan. 30. 


Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available

The latest Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for January 2026 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics
