Help Salukis in need by giving to Thanks “GivingBack” food drive
SIU Carbondale’s Thanks “GivingBack” food drive offers the opportunity to help Salukis in need this holiday season. Faculty, staff and community members are invited to donate nonperishable food items for the Saluki Food Pantry on Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the first floor cross halls of the Student Center, near the University Bookstore, or email foodpantry@siu.edu to make other arrangements.
R1 Minute focuses on giant tortoises in the Galapagos

Simon Institute to host former CNN chief White House reporter
Jessica Yellin, a former CNN chief White House correspondent with nearly three decades of journalism experience, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual conversation at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13.
Conversation of Understanding will focus on mental wellness, community care
A Conversation of Understanding on Wednesday, Nov. 12, will focus on maintaining mental wellness, resilience and strengthening community care across the SIU System. “Protecting Our Peace: Mental Wellness, Resilience and Community Care” is from noon to 1 p.m. and will be available on the SIU System’s YouTube channel. Faculty, staff and students are invited to join the discussion.
SIU Simmons Law School hosts swearing-in ceremony for new attorneys
The SIU Simmons Law School hosted a swearing-in ceremony on Nov. 5 for 35 new attorneys in Illinois — including welcoming Dean Hannah Brenner Johnson to the state’s legal practice.
HEROES program seeks donated personal care items to help students meet basic needs
SIU Carbondale’s HEROES program is conducting its Personal Care Item Drive beginning Monday, Nov. 17, through Dec. 12. Donations of new, unopened toiletry, hygiene and personal care items such as shampoo, toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine care products and various other necessities are welcome.
Naturalist photographer to highlight work Nov. 19
The Center for Teaching Excellence will host naturalist photographer Suzanne Asaturian in a discussion of her work starting at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in Morris Library, Room 110. Registration is requested but not required.
Encourage fall semester graduates to complete survey
The Career Development Center asks faculty and staff to remind students of a survey for undergraduate and graduate students who are planning to graduate in December.

The Department of Public Safety’s November 2025 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. In this month’s edition, you can review holiday season crime prevention tips, recognize DPS personnel who served in the military, review tips for Thanksgiving break and see recent community policing events.
Reminder: Mandatory annual Title IX training is underway
SIU Carbondale employees are reminded to complete mandatory training on new Title IX regulations before Dec. 19. Employees should have received an email on Oct. 15 from Vector Solutions with training information for “Preventing Harassment and Discrimination: Gateway (Illinois).” The link to the training is also available on the Office of Equity and Compliance website. Training should take about one hour.
Reminder: SIU Today Veterans Day schedule
The Thursday, Nov. 13, edition of SIU Today will have an early deadline of 4:30 p.m. today, Nov. 10, due to the university’s observance of Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
