CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s HEROES program ensures students can meet their basic needs so they can achieve their academic and life goals.

In recognition of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, HEROES will conduct a Personal Care Item Drive Nov. 17-Dec. 12. During that time, donations of new, unopened toiletry, hygiene and personal care items such as shampoo, toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine care products and various other necessities are welcome.

Items may be dropped off at the Student Health Center information desk anytime between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or at HEROES Headquarters, located on the lower level of the Student Center, weekdays from 1-4:30 p.m.

Addressing the basic needs of students is vital for their success, said Shelly Ridgeway, assistant director of Student Health Services and director of Wellness and Health Promotion Services. During the 2024-2025 school year alone, HEROES assisted more than 1,050 students with basic needs. HEROES (Higher Education Resources and Opportunities for Salukis in Need) also assists students with housing or financial needs.
