SIU celebrates 2025 Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, beginning Sept. 15
SIU Carbondale is recognizing Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month with a variety of special events, including guest speakers, a scavenger hunt, workshops, interactive activities, dancing and more from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
Charlotte Thompson Suhler honored with School of Journalism and Advertising naming
More than 100 people, including SIU System President Dan Mahony and SIU Chancellor Austin Lane, gathered Sept. 9 to dedicate the Charlotte Thompson Suhler School of Journalism and Advertising in the College of Arts and Media, marking the first time in SIU’s history that a school has been named for a woman.
Carbondale Halloween Homecoming Music Street Festival is Oct. 24
Organizers of the Carbondale Halloween Homecoming Music Street Festival are combining two of the best traditions, Carbondale Halloween and SIU Homecoming, and celebrating by shutting down the iconic Strip for an unforgettable night of music, food and family-friendly fun from 3-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24.
Sharp Museum exhibition, Sept. 12 lecture highlights women photojournalists
Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Evelyn Hockstein, senior White House photographer for Reuters, will be the guest speaker as the notable work of women photojournalists is highlighted in Sharp Museum this fall. Hockstein is the guest speaker at a Sept. 12 reception from 4:30 to 8 p.m. in the museum. The 23-photo exhibition runs through Dec. 13.
Encourage grads to attend Grad Bash on Sept. 16
Faculty and staff are encouraged to remind graduates of Grad Bash on Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in University Bookstore in the Student Center. The event is for August and December 2025 graduates.
SIU’s Constitution Day includes panel discussion on federal vs. state education issues
A free, public panel discussion on the effect that recent federal mandates involving education and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives have on state-level efforts highlight SIU Carbondale’s observation of Constitution Day from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.
Support SIU students affected by breast cancer by buying Saluki Strength apparel
SIU Carbondale is continuing its campaign to raise awareness and fight breast cancer while providing valuable support to students impacted by the disease. “Saluki Squad” Start Seeing Pink apparel is now available. Order online through Thursday, Sept. 18, with pickup available the week of Oct. 1.
SIU’s Simon Institute announces 2025 student scholarship recipients
SIU Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute is providing scholarships to nine SIU students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to public service.

The Department of Public Safety’s September 2025 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. In this month’s edition, you can review procedures for attending Saluki football games along with crosswalk safety for bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists, learn about possible warning signs for suicide and alcohol poisoning and where to get help, sign up for the LiveSafe app, and protect yourself from email scams.
Women’s soccer hosts two matches this week
The Saluki women’s soccer team hosts two matches this week at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex with Chicago State at 6 p.m. today (Sept. 11) and UT Martin at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com.
New Arts Jazztet to perform Sunday
Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence since that time. The performance will celebrate the music of George Coleman, Freddie Hubbard, Harold Land, Charlie Parker, Bobby Watson and Denny Zeitlin. The service will also be livestreamed on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.
