Environmental, LGBTQ+ advocate receives 2025 Sturgis Award
Jonny Gray, an associate professor in communication studies and a longtime advocate for both the LGBTQ+ and environmental communities, was honored today (April 17) at the SIU Board of Trustees meeting as the 2025 Lindell W. Sturgis Award recipient.
SIU Carbondale to implement new mental health fee, cost-saving course materials program
To support students as they pursue a first-class education in academic year 2025-26, SIU Carbondale will implement a new mental health fee, at the request of students, and SIU myTextbooks to ensure students have all of the course materials they need on the first day of classes for the lowest possible cost, the SIU Board of Trustees approved today (April 17).
39 faculty members earn tenure, promotion
The SIU Board of Trustees today (April 17) approved promotions in academic rank and tenure for 39 tenure-track faculty members, effective with the 2025-2026 academic year or the 2026 fiscal year beginning in July.
SIU researchers study social lives of deer to prevent spread of fatal illness
Working with the deer population at Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center, wildlife researchers at SIU Carbondale are using cameras to take a closer look at how deer socialize to better understand how a deadly disease is spread.
Film screening, discussion on “Coddling of the American Mind” is Monday
A free, public screening of “The Coddling of the American Mind: An Anxious Generation Searches for Happiness” is at 3 p.m. Monday, April 21, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.

Faculty and staff are invited to join Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement, an education community of adults 50 and older who wish to continue learning and expand their horizons through peer learning and collaborative leadership.
Saluki football livens up spring slate
It’s spring, but there is nothing like Saluki football. Get a sneak peak at this fall’s team during the annual spring game at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at Saluki Stadium. The Saluki baseball team hosts Belmont at 6 p.m. Thursday and plays a doubleheader on Friday starting at noon at Itchy Jones Stadium. The Saluki softball team hosts UT-Martin at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Charlotte West Stadium. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com.
SIU-affiliated Eco Festival to raise funds to benefit STEM educators
An SIU Carbondale-affiliated family event aimed at engaging the community in fun science activities while helping science teachers across the region is set for Saturday, April 19, at Alto Vineyards in Alto Pass.

The Department of Public Safety’s April 2025 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. In this month’s edition, you can participate in the 2025 Campus Community Survey, learn the preventative measures and resources available as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, gain insight into severe weather watches and warnings, and participate in the DPS ride-along program.
