Film screening, discussion on “Coddling of the American Mind” is Monday

A free, public screening of “The Coddling of the American Mind: An Anxious Generation Searches for Happiness” is at 3 p.m. Monday, April 21, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.

The documentary is inspired by the best-selling 2018 book by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Height. The film explores “the impact of overprotection, emotional reasoning and ideological polarization on the mental health of a rising generation, and it invites viewers to rethink how we raise, educate and engage young minds,” said Jonathan Bean, a professor in history at SIU Carbondale.

Bean will lead a 30-minute open discussion after the film screening. A reception begins at 2:30 p.m. in the library rotunda.

The event is sponsored by the Heterodox Academy chapter at SIU Carbondale.
