Board of Trustees approves honorary degrees, Distinguished Service Awards 

Edward M. Benyas, professor emeritus of oboe and conducting in SIU Carbondale’s School of Music, will receive a Distinguished Service Award following approval by the SIU Board of Trustees today (Dec. 5). Benyas is one of five individuals recommended by Chancellor Austin A. Lane for honorary degrees and distinguished service awards. 


SIU names Gower Translational Research Center in honor of $2.5M gift

The impact made by Bob and Beth Gower has been felt by SIU Carbondale students and faculty for years. Now, the Gower name will be forever imprinted into the university’s future at the Gower Translational Research Center, formerly McLafferty Annex.


Reminders on end of year payroll, W-2 forms 

Human Resources-Payroll wants to remind employees who are responsible for entering or reporting time or sending paperwork that December is a short month for processing all the necessary payrolls.


Architectural master’s students to present their work Saturday

Several students pursuing online Master of Architecture degrees will be making their first visit to campus and the region on Saturday, Dec. 7, as a part of their online architectural regional design studio course. Presentations begin at 8 a.m. in Quigley Hall Gallery, Room 119.


Center for Teaching Excellence finals and winter break services

With final exams and SIU Carbondale’s winter break approaching, the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) wants to remind faculty of support available over the next several weeks.


Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase is today

SIU Carbondale’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase today (Dec. 5) will celebrate the region’s newest innovators, inventors and entrepreneurs. Everyone is invited. The event is 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center.


Quantum vacuum authority to speak at Physics Colloquium 

Kimball A. Milton, a retired professor and expert in quantum physics from the University of Oklahoma, will give the Physics Colloquium at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in Neckers, Room 440.

The SIU Alumni Association is offering Salukis around campus the opportunity to purchase a fashionable maroon and white scarf, the perfect accent to display your Saluki pride when it’s cold outside. It also has a matching beanie to complete the look. 


Microgrants available for Saluki women

There is still time to apply for the SIU Foundation Women’s Leadership Council 2024-25 WLC Microgrant, a funding opportunity available exclusively to SIU women faculty, staff and students. The application deadline is Monday, Dec. 9.


Track and field, men’s basketball highlights Saluki athletics

Saluki fans have a few chances to catch SIU athletics on campus during the next week. The men’s and women’s track and field teams open the indoor season with Saluki Fast Start, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, at the SIU Recreation Center. The Saluki men’s basketball team hosts Southern Indiana at 2 p.m. Saturday at Banterra Center. Check team schedules at siusalukis.com


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will celebrate the music of Dee Barton, Bart Defoort, Kenny Gorelick (Kenny G), Sam Hirsh, Roland Hanna, Lars Jansson and Eric Wyatt. The service will also be livestreamed on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.   


SIU Today holiday schedule 

The last SIU Today issue before winter break is Thursday, Dec. 12. The submission deadlines remain the same. Today is the deadline for the Dec. 9 edition. The deadline for the Dec. 12 edition is Tuesday, Dec. 10. SIU Today will resume in January.
