Fall 2024 semester begins

SIU Simmons Law School unveils new name, honors donor

Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School has a nice ring to it. Now it has a fresh look to match. A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Aug. 16, unveiled the new name and signage.


SIU will celebrate Diversity Week Aug. 26-30

“Creating a Culture of Belonging for All” is the theme as the university celebrates Diversity Week 2024 with a variety of special events and activities Aug. 26-30. The registration deadline for the Women’s Equality Day luncheon is noon Friday, Aug. 23.


$345K SIU study focuses on how to keep farmed largemouth bass from eating their own 

Jim Garvey, director of the Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences, and Habibollah Fakhraei, assistant professor of environmental engineering, are among researchers working to study improving intensive aquaculture methods for largemouth bass and getting a more productive and predictable yield.


SIU Versa’tile faculty-student chamber ensemble to perform Tuesday

The premiere of “Worth Living,” a musical composition by recent SIU Carbondale graduate Thomas Edgar, highlights a Tuesday, Aug. 20, program by the faculty-student Versa’tile Chamber Ensemble. The free, public performance is at 7 p.m. in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall.


SIU Simmons Law School Class of 2027 holds induction ceremony 

More than 100 first-year students at SIU Simmons Law School got an early start on their education as they spent last week covering myriad topics in orientation. 


SIU participates again in Chicago’s Bud Billiken Parade 

About 40 Saluki alumni showed their Saluki spirit by participating in the Bud Billiken Parade 2024 on Aug. 10. The 95th annual event gave SIU an opportunity to promote brand awareness, engage community members and prospective students, along with cultivating relationships with alumni. 


SIU one of five organizations to offer crematory continuing education certification in Illinois   

As the home of the only university-housed crematory in the country and one of six mortuary science and funeral services bachelor’s degree programs in the U.S., SIU Carbondale is expanding its leadership in the field with a continuing education program for crematory operators. 


SIU alumnus donates $25K to help forestry students 

Eric Larson, a 1969 SIU alumnus, recently donated $25,000 to establish the Eric Larson Forestry Scholarship Endowment Fund in the School of Forestry and Horticulture.


Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available

The latest Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for August 2024 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
