SIU researcher leads $1.13M project to integrate AI into 6G technology

Gayan Aruma Baduge, associate professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, is leading an international team of researchers working with a total of $1.13 million in grant money on a project aimed at investigating AI-assisted integrated sensing and communications for 6G technology.


New ID cards coming to campus

Beginning July 1, SIU will be issuing a new, more secure “smart” campus ID card for students, faculty and staff that will include a chip like those used in the credit card industry.


Sunset Concert Series begins June 13 

The Sunset Concert Series kicks off Thursday, June 13, on the Shryock Auditorium lawn and will feature six weeks of free musical entertainment for all ages and musical tastes with a lineup that includes two Grammy nominees.


Remember to be vigilant about cybersecurity

The Office of Information Technology wants to remind faculty, staff and students to be vigilant about cybersecurity after one standard SIU Carbondale email account was recently compromised through deceptive practices. OIT is providing additional information on what everyone can do to increase their vigilance and protect their account, as well as the campus community.


SIU Foundation awards grants for humanities, arts research 

Four research projects in the humanities and the arts at Southern Illinois University Carbondale are receiving funds through the SIU Foundation Research and Creative Activities Award.


Carbondale Fire Department training exercise is Wednesday

The Carbondale Fire Department will conduct a hazardous materials training exercise at the SIU Power Plant on Wednesday, June 12, that will include fire trucks and rescue vehicles. The training is expected to start about 8 a.m. and in previous years has ended around 2 p.m.


Roundtable talk to examine support for first-year students

Faculty, staff and graduate assistants are invited to attend a first-year experience roundtable discussion this summer about supporting students in their first year at SIU Carbondale. The session is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 10 in the Student Center Vermillion Room.


Saluki Food Pantry seeking donations  

The Saluki Food Pantry continues to provide valuable support for students even during the summer months and welcomes donations of a wide variety of nonperishable food items to accomplish that mission.


SIU political scientist studies impact of virtual 2020 Democratic National Convention

An initial study by researchers including John S. Jackson, a visiting professor at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, shows that the virtual roll call used by delegates in nominating President Joe Biden at the 2020 Democratic National Convention (DNC) was generally approved.


Reminder: Decals-By-Mail program available through Friday 

The Department of Public Safety Parking Division’s Decals-By-Mail program for eligible faculty and staff for the fiscal year 2025 is available through Friday, June 7. This is for those choosing payroll deduction. The salary ranges for decal categories have not been increased. 


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday   

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will feature works by Clare Fischer, Billie Harris, Tom McIntosh, Martin Salemi, Nicholas Payton and Wayne Shorter. The event will be available via livestream on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.
