SIU to host statewide honors student research symposium, Feb. 23-24
Students from higher education honors programs and colleges from throughout Illinois will showcase their creativity and work when SIU Carbondale hosts the Honors Council of the Illinois Region Student Symposium, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24.
Paul Simon Institute to host national security expert to discuss global challenges
John J. Hamre, a former senior U.S. defense department official and an American international relations scholar, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual discussion on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
OIT to launch upgraded support system
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) will launch a new Tikit request portal on Tuesday, Feb. 20, to provide faculty, staff and students with technical support that is more efficient and user-friendly.
Judges needed for Region 8 Science Fair
Faculty and staff have the opportunity to volunteer for the annual Illinois Junior Academy of Science Region 8 Science Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the Student Center. More than 150 students in grades 7-12 from the region will compete for a chance to advance to the state competition in April.
SIU System Faculty Collaboration Award nominations open
The Faculty Advisory Committee for the SIU System (FACSS) is accepting applications for the 2024 Faculty Collaboration Award. The annual award recognizes faculty for impactful collaborative endeavors across campuses in the areas of teaching, scholarship and creative activities, service and/or antiracism, diversity, equity and inclusion. Apply online by May 10.
Sharp Museum Feb. 22 lecture highlights women of photojournalism
Acclaimed photojournalist Anna Rose Layden will be the guest speaker at a Feb. 22 reception in Sharp Museum that highlights the work of women photographers.
SIU Versa’tile faculty-student chamber ensemble performs this week
Brazilian violist Emerson de Biaggi will perform with the School of Music faculty-student Versa’tile Chamber Ensemble as part of a strings masterclass and recitals, Feb. 21-25.
Craft shop offers wide array of spring workshops for all
Here’s your chance to learn to create something new or enhance your crafting skills as the Craft Shop in the Student Center is offering a wide variety of spring arts and crafts workshops. All activities are open to the public, but registration is limited. Sign-up for classes closes one week before each class session begins, so claim your spots early.
Reminder: Diversity Champion Awards nominations due Feb. 29
Nominations are now being accepted for the Diversity Champion Awards, presented annually to members of the SIU community who exemplify anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion through community engagement, programming, creation of best practices and initiatives, implementation of policies and procedures, training and mentoring. All nominations must be submitted online by Feb. 29.
Reminder: Distinguished student service award nominations due March 18
Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate a deserving student for an SIU Student Distinguished Service Award by the SIU Board of Trustees. The award recognizes and honors the efforts and contributions of students in the SIU System “whose acts of service are demonstrative of excellence and exemplary commitment to the support, advancement and achievement of fellow students, their campus, and their community.” The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. March 18.
