Dental hygiene students receive special laser training
A group of 15 senior dental hygiene students participated in optional laser training to earn a special certification. The lasers are useful in treating oral ulcers and other ailments by killing the bacteria around the teeth to help promote healing.
SIU’s Paul Simon Institute awards three Simon Democracy Prizes
The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University Carbondale today (May 1) announced the inaugural recipients of the Paul Simon Democracy Prize. The institute is awarding three prizes of $5,000 each to current Illinois college or university students for the design and implementation of projects to revitalize democracy in their communities.
Administrative paid leave for COVID-19 ends May 11
The Department of Human Resources wants to remind university employees that they will no longer be able to take administrative paid leave time due to COVID-19, effective May 11. This is consistent with Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s decision in January to end the state’s public health emergency.
Decal-By-Mail program available through May 31
The Department of Public Safety Parking Division’s Decal-By-Mail program for eligible faculty and staff for the fiscal year 2024 begins today (May 1) and is available through May 31. Applicants must use payroll deduction. The salary range for decal categories has not been increased.
Workshops focus on arts and humanities, early career grant funding
Two “Let’s Talk Research” workshops on obtaining funding for faculty projects and research are set for Thursday and Friday, May 4-5.
SIU recognizes 16 students for outstanding leadership, service
Sixteen students have received Outstanding Leadership and Service Awards, which recognize their commitment to leadership, service and improving the campus.
SIU inks agreement to improve access for Sauk Valley CC students
The university strengthened its commitment to students in northwest Illinois on April 26 with an agreement to bring the expertise of a doctoral research university to qualified Sauk Valley Community College students by providing the option to earn their bachelor’s degrees remotely and at a lower cost in 12 academic programs. The agreement is the 44th Saluki Step Ahead pact that the university has with community colleges in Illinois, Missouri and Texas so far.
Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available
The monthly Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for April 2023 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
