Rescheduled town hall to address findings of campus climate survey
University leaders and representatives from constituency groups will hold a virtual town hall to discuss the findings of the SIU System Campus Climate Survey from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 (rescheduled from Jan. 31). Faculty, staff and students are invited to watch the livestream on the chancellor’s YouTube channel. Questions may be typed into the comment area during the livestream.
Campus events and continuing education realigning to better serve the public
To better meet the needs of the campus and the surrounding community, some realignment is underway for event planning. Events and activities at SIU’s Student Center will now be handled by Student Center Event Services. All other events and activities, along with continuing education, will be part of the new Events and Outreach office. The reorganization is slated for completion around March 9, at which time staff will move to their new offices.
‘Let’s Talk Research - Beyond NSF’ discussion on funding is March 3
A meeting focused on helping faculty and researchers improve applications to funding agencies other than the National Science Foundation (NSF) is set for next week.
SIU to host community meetings on high-speed internet needs next week
The Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center will host two public forums on Thursday, March 2, to allow community members to ask questions and provide input on the region’s most urgent needs and priorities relating to high-speed internet connectivity and access. The sessions are at 2:30 p.m. (for nonprofits and community organizations) and 6 p.m. (for residents). The Illinois Broadband Lab, a collaboration between the Illinois Office of Broadband and University of Illinois System, is hosting the session at SIU and a March 1 session at Shawnee College. The Southern Illinois Broadband Regional Engagement for Adoption + Digital Equity (READY) team from SIU Carbondale is a co-sponsor. People also can participate in information sessions and listening sessions by going to broadband.uillinois.edu/.
Remember to wear maroon on Spirit Friday
Not only is this a good time to wear maroon on Spirit Fridays, faculty and staff now can get excited about the Missouri Valley Conference basketball tournaments and attend upcoming home games. The Saluki women’s basketball team close out their home schedule with a pair of games at Banterra Center, starting with Indiana State at 6 p.m. today, Feb. 23, and Evansville at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Meanwhile, the Saluki women’s softball team will open the home portion of their season at 2:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, against Northern Kentucky as part of the Coach B Classic, Feb. 24-26. Josh Tripp, a pipefitter at the Student Center, is proudly wearing his maroon. Be sure and tag your favorite photo in Saluki best with #SpiritFriday.
Salukis take over Florida’s west coast
The Sunshine State was bathed in maroon last week as SIU officials, including Chancellor Austin Lane, visited with SIU alumni and friends throughout Florida’s Gulf Coast, Feb. 15-17. The Saluki Takeover Tour included receptions in The Villages, Tampa and Naples. Between receptions, Chancellor Lane, Associate Chancellor for Enrollment Management Wendell Williams, and others visited community colleges and high schools. Here is a video recap.
Chamber music society to hold two string concerts this weekend
The Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society is presenting two string concerts Friday and Sunday at Southern Illinois University Carbondale featuring internationally acclaimed violinist Andrej Kurti.
Virtual appointments available for faculty, staff regalia sale March 22
Events and Outreach (formerly University Events and Protocol) is announcing a virtual faculty and staff regalia sale through Herff Jones, a national provider of custom regalia. Graduate students wishing to purchase regalia rather than rent are also welcome.
