SIU recognizing LGBTQ+ History Month in October

SIU Carbondale is recognizing October as LGBTQ+ History Month with a wide variety of special events and activities.


SIU workshop to address economic prospects beyond coal

Representatives from federal agencies, along with state officials, are visiting SIU Carbondale today, Sept. 29, to announce a federal program for on-the-ground technical assistance and coordination to support energy communities and workers in the Illinois Basin region, and hold a daylong workshop aimed at finding economic opportunity amidst the decline of coal-related industries in the region.


Saluki Pride: Elizabeth Cheek supports crews who keep campus beautiful

For two decades, Elizabeth Cheek has been an important part of the effort to keep the SIU campus in top shape and good repair working in Facilities and Energy Management. The two-degree SIU graduate, who is vice president of the Civil Service Council, continues her mission as one of SIU's caretakers when she moves to a new position – administrative assistant to the director of undergraduate admissions – on Oct. 1. University Honors Program course proposal deadline is Oct. 31

The University Honors Program is accepting course proposals from faculty for fall 2022 and spring 2023 UHON seminars.  Courses may be proposed in the faculty’s area of choice or along the theme for the year, which is “Culture and Cosmos.”


Paul Simon Institute to host Foreign Affairs editor in virtual discussion

Daniel Kurtz-Phelan, an author, former U.S. Department of State speechwriter, and editor of the journal Foreign Affairs, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual conversation at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7.


Conversation on combatting ‘diversity fatigue’ at SIU is available

The Sept. 27 “Conversations of Understanding” virtual discussion on “diversity fatigue” among faculty, staff and students at SIU and how to combat it is available for viewing. This academic year, six “Conversations of Understanding” will focus on findings from the 2022 Viewfinder Campus Climate Survey.


SIU hosts annual high school band competition on Saturday 

Students and their families from 17 high schools in Illinois and Missouri will visit SIU Carbondale when the annual Music & Motion high school marching band competition comes to Saluki Stadium, Saturday, Oct. 1.


SIU’s Export Controls newsletter is available 

The monthly SIU Export Controls newsletter for September 2022 is available. The newsletter provides a resource for current export control issues and events that could affect SIU and its faculty. This edition includes a story on the United States’ travel advisory to Mexico and a reminder of travel tips to high-risk countries.
