Salukis take over Chicago, upset Northwestern
For the second straight year, the Saluki Takeover Tour brought SIU alumni, friends, faculty, and staff together all over the Windy City. Hosted by Chancellor Austin A. Lane and the SIU Foundation, the takeover tour featured 16 school visits, seven receptions, a posthumous degree presentation, and the Alumni Association tailgate. The Chicago Takeover culminated with a Saluki football upset over Northwestern.
SIU signs two more Saluki Step Ahead agreements
SIU signed Saluki Step Ahead agreements with Prairie State College and the College of DuPage on Sept. 16. There are now 24 pacts with community colleges in Illinois, Missouri and Texas bringing an SIU education to qualified place-bound students.
SIU is recognizing Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month with many special activities
The university is celebrating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month with a variety of special activities recognizing inclusivity with the theme, “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Campus and Community.”
SIU Carbondale welcomes 23 new faculty this fall
The university is welcoming 23 new tenure-track faculty to campus for the fall 2022 semester. Since 2019, about 100 new tenure-track faculty have been hired.
SIU hosts Fresh Check Day to support students’ mental health
The university is hosting Fresh Check Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. This fun, informative event brings together the entire campus community and serves as a “check in” for SIU students’ wellness and mental health and to ensure they have access to valuable resources.
Family Weekend features Oscar and Kevin from ‘The Office,’ football, crafts and more
SIU Carbondale celebrates Family Weekend 2022 Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 22-24. The theme is “Salukis’ Funniest Home Videos,” and the weekend will bring together students, their families and the community to have fun and make memories. The deadline to submit 2022 Saluki Family of the Year entries is at 4:30 p.m. today, Sept. 19.
Honorary degree/service award nominations deadline is Oct. 19
Faculty and staff are reminded that the university is accepting nominations for honorary degrees and distinguished service awards that will be presented at May 2023 commencement ceremonies. The nomination deadline is Oct 19. Nominations are also open to the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.
‘39 COUNTIES’ documentary screening is Thursday
“39 COUNTIES,” a documentary by an SIU Carbondale alumna and independent filmmaker that highlights nonviolent marches in Illinois counties once represented by former U.S. Rep. and SIU System President Glenn Poshard, will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship, 105 N. Parrish Lane, Carbondale. The film by Sandra Pfeifer, a 1998 cinema and photography graduate, shows Poshard’s 2020 effort that brought together ordinary people in rural towns participating in nonviolent, peaceful civic engagement. Audience discussion will follow the screening.
