Using invasive copi as baby food for farm-raised yellow perch
Researchers Karolina Kwasek and Michal Wojno are trying to find better ways to hatch and successfully raise yellow perch to the juvenile stage in aquaculture with creating a new feed that uses the invasive species copi as a protein source.

As a faculty member and researcher with dual appointments at SIU Carbondale and the SIU School of Medicine, Justin McDaniel wears multiple hats. He’s also one of an elite group of faculty and staff chosen to participate in the inaugural cohort of the L.E.A.D. SIU Carbondale Initiative. Leadership training workshops available later this fall
Free leadership training is being offered by the Staff Advisory Committee for the SIU System. The 4 1/2 hour sessions will be in Student Services Building Room 160-170. Participants will need to register for only one session. All sessions will be from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 to 4 p.m.

The university community can break out the maroon when Southern Illinois University Carbondale celebrates everything Saluki on Saturday, Sept. 3 during the 100th edition of the Du Quoin State Fair.

National Food Bank Day is Friday
In recognition of National Food Bank Day, which is Friday, Sept. 2, faculty and staff are encouraged to donate to the Saluki Food Pantry. Visit the food pantry’s webpage to learn more about giving food or monetary gifts.
SIU’s Craft Shop offers wide array of arts and crafts workshops, special events this fall
You can make clay beads, pottery, jewelry, stained glass, comic books or create a plethora of other projects during workshops offered by the university's Craft Shop, located on the lower level of the Student Center. Class sizes are limited for many, and registration is on a first come, first served basis, so organizers encourage early signup.
‘Illinois Ethics Matters’ newsletter is available
The monthly Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for August 2022 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
New Arts Jazztet will perform Friday in Cairo
New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, will perform at the “Smooth Jazz on the River Festival” at Fort Defiance State Park in Cairo at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. Admission is free.
