SIU research team looking at factors related to gun violence

A nationwide spate of mass shootings coupled with occasional gunfire locally is prompting SIU Carbondale and its hometown to cooperate on research looking for solutions. Tammy Kochel, associate dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences, is heading up a study aimed at dissecting the causes and patterns associated with gun violence in Carbondale. The city council is providing more than $64,000 for the study.


SIU revises distribution of funds recovered for research-related costs

Chancellor Austin A. Lane will accept the recommendations of a task force charged with creating a new system for recovering so-called indirect costs associated with externally funded research and service grants and for distributing the funds.

‘Grease: School Version’ is the word at SIU’s McLeod Theater, July 28-31

The “word” is definitely “Grease” when talented high school students and recent graduates from throughout the region gather in McLeod Theater later this month to tell the tale of a 1950s coming-of-age love story through the early sounds of rock ’n’ roll, hotrods and malt shops.


Youths with diabetes may register now for SIU’s Camp BETA

Camp BETA, the free overnight camp for youths ages 10-16 who have Type 1 diabetes, is returning to the Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center this fall. The popular camp, set for Sept.10-11, had been on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Registration is now underway, and the deadline is Aug. 1.


Saluki Summer Bridge program helps new students transition to college

The Saluki Summer Bridge program gives first-year students a head start toward college success as they participate in enrichment courses and leadership activities, check out the learning platforms utilized on campus, and get acquainted with all SIU has to offer.


New system to facilitate proposal submissions

Research faculty throughout the SIU System soon will have an easier time submitting proposals, thanks to a new consolidated system.
