Faculty documentary on childhood trauma caused by racism earns acclaim 

Students have the opportunity to learn — and interact daily — with internationally recognized faculty who not only are gifted instructors but also talented artists such as Pirooz Kalayeh. An assistant professor in scriptwriting and film production in the School of Media Arts who arrived last August, Kalayeh is receiving accolades for his documentary feature, “Sometimes I Dream in Farsi.”


Saluki Pride: For Kathy Elson, adaptability, positivity and straightforwardness is key

As an academic adviser for four majors and 16 specializations within the College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences, Kathy Elson takes on many roles. SIU Maple Syrup Festival rescheduled, tickets available now for breakfast 

The Maple Syrup Festival and Pancake Breakfast, Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center’s ever-popular tradition, is being rescheduled from February to March due to recent increases in COVID-19 cases in the region and the unpredictable weather. The free family friendly festival will take place March 26-27 at Camp 2, and tickets for the breakfast are now on sale.

Take a step back and imagine listening to an old-time radio show as the university’s Lyric Theater Ensemble presents “A Dinner Engagement” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11-12, in Shryock Auditorium.


Virtual workshop will help faculty, staff and students cope with stress

Sky@SIUC, a registered student organization, is hosting its 14th SKY Happiness Retreat Feb. 18-20. The virtual retreat will focus on helping participants handle stress by promoting connectedness, self-care and the mental well-being.


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday 

New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13.
