CARBONDALE, Ill. — There are myriad ways to make math easier to comprehend and to enable people to better learn it and that’s what Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s 36th annual Conference on Teaching Mathematics is all about. The conference, coordinated by Conference and Scheduling Services, provides valuable tips and information for teachers, college students or anyone with an interest in math.

It all takes place Feb. 17 at the Hancock Conference Center on the campus of John A. Logan College in Carterville, and registration is now underway.

Diverse, experienced speakers

Adam Poetzel, a mathematics education instructor with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and president of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) and the Illinois Mathematics Teacher Educators (IMTE), will present the keynote address. His presentation, “Promoting Curiosity in the Classroom,” will focus on how math educators can promote and model an environment of curiosity, a key ingredient to a meaningful learning experience. The presentation will be of interest to educators who work with all age groups.

Other speakers throughout conference include classroom teachers who will share a wide variety of tried and true ideas, practices and materials for teaching math to all grade levels. All educators who teach pre-kindergarten through sophomore college level, as well as anyone with an interest in math education, will find key insights and information at the conference.
