Baduge receives Early Career Excellence Award

Gayan Aruma Baduge, assistant professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, is the 2021 Early Career Faculty Excellence Award recipient. His research interests include a broad variety of communication theory and wireless communications, especially on massive MIMO systems, millimeter-wave communications, cooperative relay networks and device-to-device communications, among other areas.


SIU to present honorary degrees, distinguished service awards during commencement ceremonies

Southern Illinois University Carbondale will celebrate the achievements of eight individuals with honorary degrees and distinguished service awards during commencement ceremonies May 7-9 at Saluki Stadium.


SIU celebrates Earth Day by awarding grants to 11 sustainability projects

The university celebrated Earth Day 2021 today, April 22, by awarding thousands of dollars in grants to a wide variety of “green” initiatives that include recycling projects, bike trails and wind turbines.


Nominate a student for SIU System Distinguished Student Service Award

The Southern Illinois University System, SIU Board of Trustees and the SIU System Student Advisory Board seek your nomination of a student who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to service benefiting their campus, their community and the SIU System for the inaugural 2021 SIU System Distinguished Student Service Award. Rural Health Summit webinar series begins today

The first in a monthly series of webinars on COVID-19 and the impact on rural health in Illinois is at noon today, April 22. “COVID-19 and Caring for an Aging Population” is hosted by the SIU School of Medicine’s Department of Population Science and Policy; the school’s Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and the UIC School of Public Health. Registration for individual webinars in the series and COVID-19 and an Aging Rural Population policy recommendations are available.


Global health leader is SIU Alumni Association’s 2021 Distinguished Alumna

Dr. Senait Fisseha, director of global programs for the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and chief adviser to the director general of the World Health Organization, is the winner of the SIU Alumni Association’s 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor presented to alumni by the organization. The alumni association will honor Fisseha, along with four other alumni of distinction on Saturday, April 24, during an invitation-only dinner and ceremony at the Banterra Center.


Time for students to register for fall classes

To help with fall enrollment, faculty and staff are encouraged to remind their students to register for fall courses. Students can find information on the registrar’s website.


SIU will offer in-person, virtual summer camps and programs

Fun, enrichment and the opportunity to expand horizons are the focus for SIU Carbondale’s in-person and virtual summer camps. The camps are for children and youths ages 5-18 with options also available for college students and adults.
