SIU earns national award for excellence in mental health and well-being

Student Health Services is one of just 71 institutions in the country to earn the 2025 Excellence in Mental Health and Well-Being award from Insight Into Academia magazine, which advances best practices in higher education excellence and belonging.


SIU Carbondale again earns national honors for assisting transfer students

For a third consecutive year, SIU Carbondale is receiving honors for its commitment as one of the nation’s top transfer-friendly institutions by being named to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s 2025 Transfer Honor Roll – one of 251 public and private colleges and universities nationwide and one of 21 in Illinois on the list.


SIU Carbondale enhances efforts to recruit, support international students 

As part of the Imagine 2030 strategic plan, SIU Carbondale has enhanced its efforts to recruit and retain international students. That includes establishing partnerships with more than 60 international institutions and developing more joint academic programs with universities in other countries.


SIU exhibition offers insight into early anthropology development, mistakes

A free, public exhibition in Morris Library from Monday, Aug. 18, to Sept. 19 will explore the early decades of anthropology. “A Study of Man: The Growing Pains of 19th and 20th Century Anthropology” will examine the development of anthropology and the academic study of humanity, including “the growing pains and ‘bad science’ involved in the development of the field.”


Move-in to affect campus traffic, parking 

The campus will see an increase in traffic as students move in on Aug. 13 and Aug. 15. On move-in days, parking will be reserved for volunteers and families in lots 23, 39 and 4 near Thompson Point on the west side of campus and lots 55 and 106 near the Towers on the east side. View a campus map (PDF)


SIU celebrates Demolition Day for old Greek Row, Campus Lake Fountain dedication

It was a festive day at SIU on Aug. 6 with the start of the demolition of six former residence halls along old Greek Row to clear the way for a proposed new student housing development and dedication of the Campus Lake Fountain.


Deborah Barnett appointed to SIU Board of Trustees  

Deborah Barnett, a two-degree SIU Carbondale alumna and executive director of Southern Illinois Now, was recently appointed by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker to the SIU Board of Trustees.


Alumni Association Courtyard Tent is available to rent

The SIU Alumni Association Courtyard Tent is now available to rent for campus departments, student organizations and the general public. Located in the courtyard area outside of Woody Hall, the tent provides a spacious, open-air setting for receptions, gatherings, meetings and more.


SIU School of Journalism and Advertising students shine a ‘Night Light’ on region’s events 

Students in the SIU Carbondale School of Journalism and Advertising recently launched “Night Light,” a digital-first entertainment publication for what’s happening across the region. 


Former Barrington Village President Darch receives 2025 Simon-Edgar Award

Karen Darch, the former village president of Barrington, Illinois, was selected as the recipient of the 2025 Paul Simon-Jim Edgar Statesmanship Award for her three decades of practical, problem-solving and visionary leadership.


SIU Today to resume twice-a-week schedule Aug. 18  

When fall 2025 classes start Monday, Aug. 18, SIU Today will resume its usual twice-a-week schedule of Mondays and Thursdays, except for holidays, closures and breaks. Please remember the submission deadline is two business days before desired publication, if all the necessary information is provided. That means a noon Thursday deadline for Monday publication and a noon Tuesday deadline for Thursday publication. 


New Arts Jazztet to perform Sunday 

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence since that time. The performance will celebrate the music of Mose Allison, Ornette Coleman, Daniel Jackson, Stefan Karlsson, Larry Willis and Denny Zeitlin. The service will also be livestreamed on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page
