SIU’s Center for Archaeological Investigations assisting IDOT with cultural resource surveys 

SIU Carbondale’s Center for Archaeological Investigations has entered a 10-year intergovernmental agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation to assist with initial archaeological survey work for possible road and bridge projects in the region. The pact provides for up to $5 million over the life of the agreement, or approximately $500,000 per year.

The SIU Carbondale campus is gearing up for a new semester — and volunteers from the campus and community are invited to help new and returning Salukis move into their new homes away from home. Individuals and groups are encouraged to sign up by Aug. 1, to be part of the move-in squad.


Road work on Pleasant Hill Road delayed

The planned road work along a 1.5-mile stretch of Pleasant Hill Road is delayed a few weeks.


Annuitants’ SIU Carbondale chapter to meet Aug. 4

Bryan Soady, executive director of the statewide State Universities Annuitants Association, will be at a general meeting and reception of SIU Carbondale’s SUAA chapter on Tuesday, Aug. 4, in the Student Center Old Main Room.


SIU Foundation celebrates record fundraising year, historic milestones 

SIU Carbondale supporters contributed a record-breaking $54 million during fiscal year 2026, a 40% increase over the previous year and the most successful fundraising year in SIU Foundation history. The foundation contributes to long-term goals for the university, including student support through scholarships and research grants.


SIU President Dan Mahony: “Public Broadcasting: Why it Matters for Communities and Higher Education” 

SIU System President Dan Mahony’s latest “Office Hours” podcast is “Public Broadcasting: Why it Matters for Communities and Higher Education.” The podcast focuses on the impact of public radio and television on our communities and campuses, including the challenges and opportunities facing public media today. Mahony talks with Larry Hunter, WSIU executive director, WSIU emeritus staff member Jack Tichenor and NPR Illinois (WUIS) morning host Michelle Eccles.


Red Cross blood drive is July 28 at Student Health Services

Student Health Services is hosting a community blood drive with the American Red Cross from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 28. To schedule an appointment, visit the Red Cross website. Enter SHCStudentHealthCtr or call 800-733-3767 (800-RED-CROSS) in the “ZIP or sponsor code” section. Walk-in donors are also welcome.


New Arts Jazztet to perform Sunday  

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service, at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence since that time. The performance will feature works by Ralph Carmichael, Joe Davidian, Kenny Davis, Joe Farnsworth, Harold Land, and Steve Turre. The service will also be livestreamed on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.
