SIU Carbondale researchers name three new species of poison dart frogs

Research led by Jason Brown, an associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences, resulted in naming three new species of poison dart frogs from the Amazon rainforests of Peru and Brazil this year.


Saluki Pride: Marquitta Bowman win’s SIU’s Emerging Leader award

In a few short years, Marquitta Bowman, director of training and assistant director of Student Health Services’ Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), has already made quite an impression on her colleagues at SIU Carbondale for her leadership and service to students, faculty, staff and the community — and especially for her service to underrepresented populations. Those efforts earned Bowman the university’s 2026 Emerging Leader Award.


Multi-agency tornado response  exercise on Tuesday

A multi-agency police and emergency management agency full-scale tornado response exercise, set for noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, will impact a few areas on the west side of the SIU Carbondale campus.


School of Music faculty piano duo featured in Yellow Moon Gyroid Concert Series

SIU School of Music faculty Anthony Gray and Jiyeon Lee will perform Thursday, June 11, in the Yellow Moon Gyroid Concert Series, in Morris Library’s third-floor rotunda. The free, public concert begins at 5 p.m.

SIU System President Dan Mahony’s latest “Office Hours” podcast is “A Fairer Formula: Rethinking Higher Ed Funding.” The podcast focuses on efforts underway in Illinois to modernize the way the state funds universities, along with exploring how higher education funding models operate across the nation. Mahony talks with national higher education funding experts, Denisa Gandara from the University of Texas at Austin, and Robin Steans from Advance Illinois.


SIU dental hygiene students specially trained in laser, community dentistry

SIU Carbondale’s 2026 dental hygiene graduates were successful in completing extra training to prepare for career success as all 26 students earned community dental health coordinator certification and six of them also completed optional laser certification.
