Elise Ann Allen, a Rome-based Vatican correspondent and Pope Leo biographer, will join SIU Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at 10 a.m. Central, Tuesday, June 16, for a virtual discussion on how the new pontiff is reshaping the Catholic Church, and his impact on global affairs and American political life.

Sharp Museum textile exhibition highlights sustainability
An 18-piece textile exhibition that focuses on utilizing recycled scrap material by artist Dawn Murtaugh is on exhibit through Aug. 28 in Sharp Museum’s Hall of Art in South Hall.

‘Freedom to Freedom Celebration Series’ starts Saturday
A “Freedom to Freedom Celebration Series,” a dynamic series of free, educational, and family-friendly events throughout the Carbondale area, begins Saturday, June 13 and runs through July 4. The events honor Juneteenth and Independence Day and include a special pre-fireworks concert outside of SIU Carbondale’s Banterra Center on July 4. SIU Alumni Association’s St. Louis scholarship reaches $25K endowment goal
The SIU Alumni Association’s St. Louis Scholarship has reached its $25,000 endowment goal, cementing the fund’s future as a lasting source of financial support for area students to attend SIU Carbondale.
New Arts Jazztet to perform Sunday
Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service, at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence since that time. The performance will feature works by Kenny Barron, Hermeto Pascoal, Nicholas Payton, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, and McCoy Tyner. The service will also be livestreamed on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.
