SIU’s Campus Sustainability Month celebration starts this week

In the tradition of SIU Carbondale’s longstanding commitment to sustainability and being “green,” the university is planning a variety of special events this month in recognition of October as Campus Sustainability Month. The kickoff event is from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in Parkinson Laboratory, Room 103.


Flu immunizations will be available on campus Oct. 25, 31  

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) will provide free flu immunizations for all active and retired SIU Carbondale employees, their dependents and surviving spouses enrolled in a state-sponsored health plan. Immunizations are Oct. 25 and Oct. 31 in the Student Center’s Renaissance Room.


SIU adopts NEOED job applicant tracking system    

SIU Carbondale is transitioning from its current job applicant tracking software, HireTouch, to NEOED effective no later than Jan. 1, 2024. HireTouch will continue to be fully operational through the end of the 2023 calendar year.


SIU’s plans for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

SIU Carbondale will be in the international spotlight once again on April 8, 2024, with the second total solar eclipse in seven years, and the region is again the only location in the world to be the optimal viewing site. The Eclipse Steering Committee is sharing information that will be helpful in planning for activities when thousands of visitors come to the campus and region from Friday, April 6 through Monday, April 8.


Dewey Center celebrates reopening with international symposium on John Dewey

An interdisciplinary, international conference on campus this week will focus on the work of American philosopher and educator John Dewey and highlight the resurgence of the university’s Center for Dewey Studies.


Graduate research forum set for Oct. 26 

The amazing research, scholarly and creative activities of SIU Carbondale graduate students will be highlighted at the 2023 Graduate Research Forum on Oct. 26 in the Student Center Art Alley, which is on the second floor.


Salukis Care Week, Oct. 9-13, to help students with emotional wellness

During Salukis Care Week, set for Oct. 9-13, Undergraduate Student Government (USG) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) are planning a variety of special activities, culminating with Salukis Care Day on Friday, Oct. 13. Various campus organizations and departments will offer information, resources and help to students as well.


SIU honors 2023 Women of Action

The university recently honored five recipients of the second annual Women of Action Awards.


Reminder: Higher education summit focusing on diversity, equity is Oct. 19-20 

Registration is open for the Illinois Higher Education Equity Symposium in Collinsville, Illinois, on Oct. 19-20. The summit will focus on understanding the challenges that underrepresented groups in higher education face and implementing strategies for change.


Saluki pop-up yard signs available

The Civil Service Council Education Assistance Program is presenting an opportunity for Salukis to show their spirit. A variety of Saluki pop-up yard signs can be purchased through Silkworm through Oct. 15. A portion of all sales will go to the council’s education assistance program, which provides scholarships for dependents of SIU civil service employees.
