Sixteen talented faculty and staff from throughout campus are participating in the 2023 cohort of the L.E.A.D. SIU Carbondale Initiative.


Air Force ROTC to hold stair climb to commemorate 9/11  

Members of the university’s Air Force ROTC detachment will pay tribute to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, with a strenuous workout session on Monday, Sept. 11, at Saluki Stadium. This year, organizers are opening the free event to Southern Illinois first responders, veterans and the local community.


SIU’s ‘Journey to the Eclipse’ talk on Friday focuses on 2017 event

A series of public talks – the next of which is set for Friday, Sept. 1 – is shedding light on the upcoming total eclipse this April, as well as other celestial studies. The next “Journey to the Eclipse” talk is set for 3 p.m. Friday at the Guyon Auditorium in Morris Library. The series is free and open to the campus and public.


‘Truly exceptional’ SIU psychology major and swimmer dives into neuroscientific research

For many college students, being co-captain of the swim team while racking up academic and athletic accolades would be good enough, but SIU Carbondale student Ella Kerr was fascinated with getting involved in research too. So, the senior psychology student with a minor in neuroscience has immersed herself in not one, not two, but three intriguing research labs.


Free violence response training 

The Department of Public Safety offers free training on the first Wednesday of each month at Trueblood Hall for students, faculty and staff on what to do in case of an active shooter. For more information, including how to register, visit the Emergency Preparedness website. 


Remember to wear maroon on Spirit Friday 

A new semester brings excitement to the classroom and in athletics. Spirit Friday also offers an excellent chance for faculty and staff to show their Saluki pride and don maroon, like Richard Jones, director of Saluki track and field and cross country. SIU opens the 2023 football season at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Saluki Stadium against Austin Peay, while the women’s volleyball team hosts Lindenwood at 6 p.m. Sept. 6 at Davies Gym. SIU earns coveted CFA Institute recognition, offers added value for finance students 

SIU’s Bachelor of Science in finance program is one of just eight institutions of higher education in Illinois and 270 in the country to be designated a University Affiliation Program by the prestigious CFA Institute  (Chartered Financial Analyst). That gives SIU students access to extra training opportunities and significantly reduces our students’ cost of taking the CFA exams and pursuing the CFA charter, a highly recognized credential in the investment industry worldwide.


Two Catalyst bike races coming to Touch of Nature this fall 

The Catalyst Race Series returns to the Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center this fall with two events, giving bikers the opportunity to compete on one of the Midwest’s premier, professionally designed and built mountain biking trail systems. The first race is Sept. 9, and online registration is available.


Students visit flood plain to learn about land use, environmental justice along Mississippi River

Nearly 70 SIU Carbondale students, including 55 first-year SIU School of Law students, traveled to a Mississippi River flood plain in Alexander County on Aug. 30 to learn more about land use policies and environmental and social justice.


No SIU Today on Monday  

There will be no SIU Today on Monday, Sept. 4, due to the Labor Day holiday. SIU Today will resume on Thursday, Sept. 7. Submission deadlines remain the same.
