SIU prof gets $445K grant for genetic research on a devastating childhood cancer

Judith Davie, associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology in the SIU School of Medicine, is using a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help her find genetic-based answers in the battle against rhabdomyosarcoma, a pediatric cancer that arises from changes to the DNA of normal skeletal muscle cells.


Exhibit to showcase prominent artists and writers in Caresse Crosby’s diverse collection

An exhibit highlighting art collected by socialite, publisher and early feminist Caresse Crosby — most of which has never been displayed — opens Aug. 22 at SIU Carbondale's University Museum.


Saluki Athletics surpasses $3 million in fundraising for first time since 2011

Saluki Athletics excelled both on the field and on its balance sheet during the 2022-23 season. For the fiscal year that ended in June, SIU Athletics surpassed $3 million in fundraising for the first time since 2011, raising $3,031,467 in private donations. Fundraising was up 5.2% over FY 2022 and 18.9% over FY 2021.


Disability Support Services changes name to Office for Access and Accommodations

The Office of Disability Support Services has changed to the Office for Access and Accommodations (OAA). While the name might change, the university’s commitment to ensuring that students with a diversity of abilities have meaningful access to all campus programs, resources and services remains steadfast. 


SIU participates in Chicago’s Bud Billiken Parade 

More than 60 Saluki alumni showed their Saluki spirit this past weekend by participating in the Bud Billiken Parade 2023 on Aug. 12. The 94th annual event gave SIU an opportunity to promote brand awareness, engage community members and prospective students, along with cultivating relationships with alumni.

A guide to important, student-related policies, information and resources is available online as a reference for all faculty, staff and students. Football home opener discounted tickets for faculty, staff

SIU Athletics is offering $5 tickets for SIU faculty and staff for the Saluki football home opener against Austin Peay at 6 p.m. Sept. 2. The ticket discount expires at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18.


Women of Action nomination deadline is Aug. 21

The Women’s Resource Center is hosting the second Women of Action Awards ceremony Aug. 29 in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. The nomination deadline is 11:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21. The program is part of the university’s Diversity Week activities, “Celebrating Carbondale’s Diverse Communities,“ Aug. 28-Sept. 1.  


Online criminology bachelor’s program earns recognition from Forbes

SIU Carbondale’s criminology and criminal justice online bachelor’s program was recently recognized by Forbes Advisor when comparing affordability, course offerings and delivery methods.


SIU inks Saluki Step Ahead agreement to improve access for Heartland Community College students

The university strengthened its commitment to students in central Illinois on Aug. 14 with a Saluki Step Ahead agreement with Heartland Community College.


SIU’s Export Controls newsletter is available 

The monthly SIU Export Controls newsletter for August 2023 is available. The newsletter provides a resource for current export control issues and events that could affect SIU and its faculty. This edition includes information from the Center for Security and Emerging Technology on looking out for potential existential risks that artificial intelligence may pose, guidance on the use of drones and SIU’s export control compliance manual.


SIU Today to resume twice-a-week schedule on Monday  

As the fall 2023 semester begins, starting Monday, Aug. 21, SIU Today will resume its usual twice-a-week schedule of Mondays and Thursdays, except for holidays, closures and breaks. Please remember the submission deadline is two business days before desired publication, if all the necessary information is provided. That means a noon Thursday deadline for Monday publication and a noon Tuesday deadline for Thursday publication.
