Disability Support Services changes name to Office for Access and Accommodations
The Office of Disability Support Services has changed to the Office for Access and Accommodations (OAA). While the name might change, the university’s commitment to ensuring that students with a diversity of abilities have meaningful access to all campus programs, resources and services remain steadfast.
“The new name is more inclusive of the work we do for students, faculty and staff, as well as the campus community and indicative of where we want to lead the campus — toward access,” Lisa Caringer, director of OAA, said. “Access is a tide that lifts all boats. The term accessibility means that the needs of disabled people are specifically considered in designing a space, course, or an event. We have access when everyone — including, disabled, neurodiverse, d/Deaf people — can use, participate and enjoy a space, course or an event without the need for an intervention or accommodations process.”
Staff from both programs are working to provide a comprehensive process and approach for assisting all disabled and neurodiverse students, Caringer said.
“Employee accommodations are also an important part of how we serve the campus community,” she added. “SIU employees and employers can contact us for assistance when disability related limitations make it difficult to get the job done.”
Even people who don’t identify as disabled benefit from access, Caringer noted. Some examples include using a ramp to wheel equipment, a stroller or suitcase into a building; using captions when wanting to watch a late-night movie without disturbing others, and using the ReadSpeaker plug in D2L to read an online quiz when having trouble concentrating.
“We appreciate the support of the administration as we lead the campus community in enhancing a culture of access, where the needs of disabled students and staff are anticipated and considered a priority,” she said.
