SIU among select U.S. schools to test young bulls for breeding potential

Thirty-four bulls have arrived on campus to be evaluated over the next several months for desirable growth performance, carcass and genetic traits that can be passed down to offspring. Jay Nair, assistant professor in the School of Agricultural Sciences, said that the SIU Beef Evaluation Center is one example of what makes SIU rare among Research 1 universities in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions for Higher Education.


Sustainability, Touch of Nature unification enhances commitment and mission 

Bringing SIU Carbondale’s sustainability efforts under the umbrella of Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center perfectly meshes with the school’s mission of education and outreach, officials said. As the integration moves forward, officials are seeking campus and public input on what the future of sustainability at SIU should look like. 


SIU School of Art and Design 2025 Iron Pour is Saturday 

A lecture by internationally known mixed media sculptor Joseph Bigley is part of this year’s free, annual fall cast iron pour activities by students in SIU Carbondale’s School of Art and Design sculpture program. The iron pour begins at noon on Saturday, Nov. 8, in the school’s Foundry Complex at 1520-1560 W. Pleasant Hill Road.


Join SIU for its 2025 First Generation College Celebration 

A special celebration Nov. 5-13 will recognize a significant segment of the SIU Carbondale student population – first generation Salukis. About two of every five SIU students are first generation, meaning they are the first in their immediate family to earn a bachelor’s degree, and they will be honored with a variety of special activities.

Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center’s annual Buffalo Tro, set for Nov. 21, is both a cherished tradition and an evening filled with good food, sharing stories around the campfire and fun. Purchase tickets online through Nov. 19. No tickets will be available at the door.


Student Speakers Forum on Nov. 6 looks at today’s influencers 

In today’s bull rush of messages and opinions that look to sway people’s opinions, five SIU Carbondale undergraduate students will share their thoughts on influence on Thursday, Nov. 6, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. The free, public forum is from 7 to 8 p.m. 


Conversation of Understanding is available for viewing

The Oct. 29 Conversation of Understanding with recent SIU System Dr. Wesley G. Robinson-McNeese ADEI Lifetime Achievement Award recipients is available for viewing. The sessions are hosted by the SIU System’s Office of Antiracism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The conversation begins at 13:30.

SIU Today Veterans Day schedule  

The Nov. 13 edition of SIU Today will have an early deadline of 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, due to the university’s observance of Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
