SIU recognizes LGBTQ+ History Month with numerous activities
SIU Carbondale is celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month in October with a number of special events and activities.
SIU System appoints leaders in financial and administrative affairs and audit departments
SIU System President Dan Mahony announces the appointments of Justin Oates to serve as the vice president for financial and administrative affairs and board treasurer, as well as Evonne Thompson as the executive director of audit serving as the chief audit executive for the multicampus SIU System.
SIU’s 2025 Banned Books Week includes LGBTQ+ exhibition, discussion
An exhibition celebrating the history of lesbian pulp fiction, along with a recognition on the continued harms of censorship with book bans, are part of showcases in Morris Library. A discussion on the exhibition “Of Love Forbidden: An Exhibit of Lesbian and Gay Literature,” is from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.

Get in the “spirit” of Homecoming 2025 at SIU by participating in the Homecoming Spirit Competitions. Registration for contests involving faculty, staff and students is underway until 4:30 p.m. Oct. 13.

Reminder: Register for Saluki Women’s Weekend
There is still time to register for the fourth annual Saluki Women’s Weekend “Women in Empowerment” conference, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4, in the Student Center Ballrooms. The registration deadline is 5 p.m. today (Oct. 2). The luncheon and brunch are sold out, but the other activities are available. Creator of styropyro videos to discuss physics and electricity
SIU Carbondale alumnus and YouTube science video creator Drake Anthony will present “100,000 Amps and Beyond From Short-circuiting a Bank of 400 Car Batteries,” a free, public lecture at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in Neckers Building, Room 440.
SIU Trumpet Studio to perform Nov. 7 at Hangar 9
The SIU Trumpet Studio, under the direction of Ricky Spears, an assistant professor in the School of Music, will perform Nov. 7 along with the Grammy Award-winning New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band at Hangar 9, 513 S. Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
Poshard presents poetry to support Saluki Food Pantry
Former SIU System President Glenn Poshard presented a poetry reading Sept. 29 that raised funds and collected food donations to support the Saluki Food Pantry.
Busy Saluki sports slate for Family Weekend
The Saluki football team hosts Indiana State at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in Saluki Stadium. The women’s volleyball team hosts Indiana State at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in Davies Gym. The Saluki women’s soccer team hosts the University of Illinois Chicago at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. The Saluki softball team hosts Parkland College at 1 p.m. Sunday and Illinois Central College at 3 p.m. that day at Charlotte West Stadium. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com.
SIU to recognize National APEX Day with virtual workshops, proclamation
Illinois APEX Accelerator at SIU Carbondale will host a pair of virtual events Oct. 8 in recognition of National APEX Day and celebration of 40 years of fostering success with government contracting.
