Football and tailgating, a tasting event, an outdoor movie, a craft sale, Greek Sing and a guest appearance by actor, restaurateur, author, activist and drug counselor Danny Trejo are just a few of the fun activities in store for visitors at SIU Carbondale’s Family Weekend 2025, set for Oct. 2-5.
Anderson honored as SIU Inventor of the Year for 2025
SIU Carbondale Geology Professor Ken B. Anderson, director of the SIU Advanced Energy Institute, was honored Sept. 18 with the Southern Illinois University System Inventor of the Year Award.
800+ high school students participate in SIU Day

Mandatory annual Ethics Act training begins Wednesday
Mandatory 2025 annual Ethics Act training for all SIU Carbondale faculty, staff, graduate assistants, undergraduate assistants, volunteers, student workers and extra help workers takes place Oct. 1-Dec. 31 on the D2L platform. School of Medicine employees located on the Carbondale campus will complete training using HealthStream.
Strong alumni turnout marks SIU’s inaugural Saluki Takeover Tour in D.C.
The inaugural Saluki Takeover Tour Washington, D.C., drew a combined 175 alumni and friends across two high-energy events on Sept. 23, signaling strong momentum for SIU’s outreach in the nation’s capital.
Register now for Saluki Women’s Weekend
Registration is underway for the fourth annual Saluki Women’s Weekend “Women in Empowerment” Conference, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4, in the Student Center Ballrooms. The free, inclusive event features panel discussions, breakout sessions, a luncheon and Saluki Women’s Awards presentation, a vendor fair, networking opportunities, a mentorship brunch and tailgate prior to the Family Weekend Saluki home football game against Indiana State on Oct. 4. Reminder: Honorary degree/service award nominations deadline is Oct. 15
SIU Carbondale is accepting nominations for honorary degrees and distinguished service awards that will be presented at May 2026 commencement ceremonies. The nomination deadline is Oct. 15. Nominations are also open to the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.
Salukis Build Here: SIU alumni invited to launch, grow businesses in Southern Illinois
The SIU Foundation, SIU Alumni Association, Southern Illinois Now (SI Now), the City of Carbondale, Carbondale Main Street and the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce are partnering to launch Salukis Build Here, a new initiative encouraging alumni to start, relocate or expand their businesses in Southern Illinois. The partnership will be formalized with a signing ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Alumni Association Courtyard Tent outside Woody Hall.
Everyone welcome at SIU’s 5K/10K Trail Run/Walk on Oct. 4
Registration is underway for the 10th edition of SIU Carbondale’s Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center Rocky Ledges 5K/10K Trail Run/Walk on Oct. 4. Early registration is available through Thursday, Oct. 2, although participants can sign up prior to the event if spots are available.
Reminder: Poshard poetry reading to benefit Saluki Food Pantry
A one-hour free poetry reading featuring former SIU System President Glenn Poshard will kick off a food drive to stock the Saluki Food Pantry at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, in Student Center Ballroom B. Attendees are invited to bring monetary and food donations to the event.
Leadership training workshop openings remain
Seats are available for free leadership training workshops offered in October by the Staff Advisory Committee for the SIU System. Seats remain in four offerings for the Oct. 7-9 workshops.
Women’s soccer, volleyball and softball in action
The Saluki women’s soccer team hosts Evansville at 6 p.m. today (Sept. 25) at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. The Saluki softball team hosts St. Charles Community College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Charlotte West Stadium, and the women’s volleyball team hosts Evansville at 5 p.m. Saturday in Davies Gym.
