Leadership training workshop openings remain
Seats are available for free leadership training workshops offered in October by the Staff Advisory Committee for the SIU System.
Seats remain in four offerings for the Oct. 7-9 workshops.
The 3 1/2 hour in-person, interactive workshops are appropriate for all staff and will involve individual, small group and large group activities. The sessions are split into half-day workshops to better fit schedules, and follow similar workshops previously offered to all interested non-faculty employees at SIU Carbondale, SIU Edwardsville and the School of Medicine in Springfield.
Employees are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to improve leadership skills, increase confidence, build relationships and have fun.
The facilitator will again be Dave Heth, who retired after 24 years as finance director at SIU Edwardsville and who has broad training experience.
Topics are:
- The Roles of a Leader — it is recommended to take this first.
- Unleash Initiative to Improve Your Work and Workplace.
- Empowerment and Delegation.
- Motivation and Leading Without a Title — formerly combined with Empowerment above.
Each workshop is in Student Services Building Room 150/160. Email Heth if you are unsure which of the previous workshops you have attended.
There is no registration deadline, but seats are limited. In previous years, last-minute cancellations left many seats unfilled. If your plans change after you register for a session, please email Heth as soon as possible so the seat can be offered to someone else.
Oct. 7
- 8-11:30 a.m. — Section 419 — The Roles of a Leader.
Oct. 8
- 1-4:30 p.m. — Section 422 — Unleash Initiative to Improve Your Work and Workplace.
Oct. 9
- 8-11:30 a.m. — Section 423 — Empowerment and Delegation.
- 1-4:30 p.m. — Section 424 — Motivation and Leading Without a Title.
As with the previous trainings, these workshops are supported by the system president, SIU Carbondale and SIU Edwardsville chancellors, and the dean and provost of the School of Medicine. The administration encourages supervisors to allow their employees to attend this professional development opportunity, as operations permit. Staff should seek approval to attend from their supervisors as early as possible. Staff are not required to take vacation, personal time or lose their lunch hour to attend these events.
